After realising that several releases on The Viper Labe (http://www.the-viper-label.co.uk) by the like of The Stairs and The La's were lossy sourced, I contacted the label. I was re-assured that they were all sourced from the masters and were apparently shocked at the suggestion that the albums were lossy sourced. When I contacted them again about another release that was again lossy, they admitted that they take what were originally analogue and digital (depending on the age of the recording) and deliberately master via minidisc!!!? Paul Hemmings, the guy who runs the label states (after me suggesting the tracks may have gone through Atrac compression as opposed to mp3).... "We do mix down onto mini disc and have done for years ( as we like the compression - as does Edgar ). Then it is converted into a CD format for mastering. " (Edgar is Edgar Jones of The Stairs - who has released material on other labels which strangely were not lossy sourced!). What do people make of this practise? I personally think it's pretty disgusting to take analogue and high res digital masters and deliberately feed them through a lossy digital format before mastering back to CD?!
