I agree, but I attributed that to his hearing and the tight quarters--the division of guitar duties in those clips is very different from the concerts I've seen, but maybe I just haven't noticed Simon's spackle. :p -E

Me too! Great venue, Boardwalk Hall.

I remember Sting noting from the stage that it's got the best acoustics in the world.

What time will The Who take the stage on Sat night?

I was off the floor and couldn't hear him that well, but when I could he was totally on point. I think the Tonight Show clips above are more flattering to him than Pete (who was on fire at the actual DC show). -E

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure. My cousin told me the acoustics are really excellent there.

It is an interesting development. Was it something personal, was there a salary dispute?

Looks like he has opted to tour with John Mayer instead. Maybe he had already committed to that tour not knowing The Who would continue to extend their tour dates?

I am completely and utterly surprised by how good they sounded on Fallon. The band was great, the tight harmonies always help, but whoever is doing sound on that show deserves their income. That mix was incendiary and beats any of The Who's recent live recordings hands down. Just electrifying. I'm really happy this exists.

It was dropped 0 octaves. It's in the same key it's always been in, just the overall "tone" of his voice is lower...he's still singing more or less the same melody in the same octave as always. Except in the choruses he seems to mostly take one of the lower harmony parts on the "miles and miles and miles" parts and the backing vocalists do the higher ones.

Right. He's been with them for 16 years. Makes you wonder...

Pino was the Kenny Jones of Who bass players.

Probably fed up to the back teeth with being inaudible and a poor fit stylistically for The Who. Doesn't look like the replacement adds anything either given Roger's insistence on limiting the bass player's volume.

Disagree. He wasn't as thunderous as John but he added his own character and has been playing with the road band for over a decade. I watched the IoW video this and was struck by his playing.

When audible, the new guy was way more compelling than Pino. I think Pino played to/within the rhythm, was more inclined to linger near the root notes and had a dull tone in general. New guy, like John, seems to have a polyrhythmic approach (there's gotta be a better technical term for what I'm talking about ...), a greater comfort level in the upper registers, and a more aggressive tone. You can get a sense of this in the "I Can See For Miles" clip above. -E
