I tried searching the archives, but unfortunatly the key words "who quick one" yields lots of non-who hits. So.... I'll just have to ask! Question #1: Does anyone have an opinion on what the best sounding release of A Quick One is, either in vinyl or cd format? Question #2: Is the current cd reissue mastered by Jon Astley? Question #3: Is the current cd reissue remixed? Question #4: Is this 180gm vinyl mastered from the original tapes, or is it from the recent digital remastering (/mixing?)? i.e. this
1. Polydoor reissue, LP 2. Yep. 3. On the CD, I believe the Ready Steady Who EP was remixed. Not sure. 4. Sounds great, although I'm fairly sure it was independently mastered. Has the inclusion of Happy Jack as the last track on side 2, not listed. Worth picking up. Have ya tried Peter at Trumpet? He and Ron should have a few even still.... The CD sounds good, but there's this vinyl and others that sound great. Don't break your neck though..... I have a Black Polydoor reissue of Who's Next from France, issue 1990 or so. Sounds incredible!
Thanks Sckott! Question: is your answer to #4 in regards to your answer to #1? Or is #1 a different reissue?
I remember owning a red Polydoor with black print. This was pressed a tad hot, but sounded great. Must have been a mid-to-late 70's GEMA copy, UK made in Germany. Your best bet right now might be the reissue you see there. Don't go eBaying. In fact, I implore most EVERYONE here to NOT use eBay for general shopping. Makes great window shopping, but prowl other places 1st. Chances are, you'll find somewhere that offers the same thing for gobs less. L K and you'll find one. These German issues made for UNI shoulnd't be out of print, but might be soon. A lot of them seem average, but they do sound great. They look like a BLACK Polydoor, not the older red.
1) LP - Copy from the "Phases" box set. However, So Sad About Us is in fake stereo there, so you'll need a Decca Happy Jack LP for that song in stereo. CD - Well, there is no such thing. The old POLYDOR CD was decent, but it was all mono. About half of the old MCA CD was in stereo, which mirrored the LP, but the quality was a LOT worse than the LP, which was pretty good. The reissued CD is crap. 2) No. Tim Young did the mastering. No matter, as it still sounds like crap. 3) No. Although, plans are in the works to upgrade the master on the reissue to include about half the album in remixed (stereo) form. However, if Jon Astley is mastering, kiss any good sound goodbye. 4) The 180 gm issue is a POS - they used the same stereo/fake stereo tape that the old MCA CD did. Avoid it.
Sckott, where'd ya get the animated icon? I tried your suggested searches and couldn't see anything that remotely comes close to that cool page of them that you posted on the old Forum. Hmmm It appears that it won't even let me copy them.
Yeah. I'm a horrible speller. By the time I find my own blunder, it's too late to edit. http://www.polydor.co.uk/ New site launching soon....
You might try http://www.mysmilies.com. Lotsa good smilies there, both still and animated. Luke, interesting tidbit about the possible A Quick One reissue. I remember when the '95 version came out, somebody (Astley? Andy Macpherson? Chris Charlesworth?) said that all the multitracks for that album had been destroyed in a flood, precluding the possibility of remixing. Funny how things that were ostensibly gone forever can have a way of cropping up eventually! You're right about Astley, though. To borrow from the Hollies, he's King Midas in reverse.
Yes, I believe it was Jon that said the multitracks went down in a flood. That was his excuse for "why is this CD almost all mono?" It all boils down to the fact that for that CD he basically just grabbed whatever tapes he could find and used them. Yes, as far as I know, just over half of the multitracks have shown up and have been remixed. I'd hope they'd use the stereo masters for the remaining songs, but... Then again, it really doesn't matter if Astley's mastering, does it? I love it!
