But you're not buying anything. You're just locking in a price now and you cancel later if you don't like it when you get more info. There's nothing to trust. It's a win-win unless you simply forget to cancel.
It'd be a long stretch for sure. But you do raise a valid point. My Generation was the title of both their debut LP AND a 1996 compilation, so who knows?
Fwiw I agree speculatively though seemingly in all likelihood with the latter remark, though not the former. To me MG is an essential and indispensible Who lp plus b sides plus earlier singles, plus possible High #'s/Detours? recordings if included, plus Pete album demos, as well as a necessity in original mono and at least a curiosity with varying success in its remixed stereo versions though I trust the info posted that Talmy's remix isn't included. The only tbing weird to me about it is if there wasn't a super deluxe version of this album and its related material. Some fans obsess with talk about legacy and I try to steer clear of that best I can as a fan but how can 1 not try to empty the vaults for the debut album and its many additional songs, mixes, and maybe some alt takes, of the material, and it not be a signficant chapter in their legacy. I may have negated my own point there lol but hopefully the point is taken. Granted, the amount of 'new' unreleased material, or what have you, as you allude to seems likely next to nil and I think if so that is a relevant and important point and I don't like the idea of the few modern overdubs mixed into the latest stereo mix nor some parts missing that are part of the mono mix either. With a Who reissue we can probably agree there will likely be something many of us will think is messed up about it lol. For instance, vinyl will quickly mess it up for me if it is included as a 'disc' in the set! Look forward to more details. Will the discs be housed in a giant drum . Oy! Granted, could be a tough sell for those who have previous releases from Japan and the newest download only remix to stereo. I may end up being one of those being difficult to sell it to due to that but it's such an important album and era of material to me I hope there could be a few surprises that exist and that the box and book design and materials are top shelf. Gonna have to wait and see on that with my expectations lower than midling.
Wouldn't this be the perfect release to gather all the loose ends, mixes and versions from the 1964-65 period? Again, knowing how crazy the other deluxe editions are in leaving stuff out, I might be wishing too much...
Actually it wasn't me who said this. I'm pretty certain that Charlton 1976 was not recorded. There was apparently an intention to record it but this plan was scrapped at the last minute - as far as existing photos reveal, there were no recording mikes on the stage. However, the so-called audience recording does sound like it came from the mixing desk, but that's a different thing again. The energy and rush of speculation about the My Generation box set is amusing enough. Can someone tell me if the "Super Deluxe Edition" comes from any official source or is the whole debate the result of IMWAN? If the latter, I think someone has been too literal with the facts. There is no scope for 5 CD set to be produced from that one debut album alone.
The Who tend to specialise in overpriced reissues of material already available but configured in a way that means you have to buy a big box set rather than something a lot cheaper, and always make sure they use an incorrect mix or two somewhere so none of the sets are ever definitive or the last word. It wouldn't be autumn without news of a new Who box.
The 2014 MFiT mono and stereo downloads of the album are definitive enough for me. They sound great (apart from 1 or 2 recent overdubs) and there's no way I'll be spending over $200 for the CD versions of what I already have. I've almost given up hope of seeing some live 1971 material released.
Nope. It's unclear if it will be 5 CDs or if some of the "discs" will be vinyl or Blu-ray, but it is a SDE of the first album.
£108 ? For a My Gen box ? Sorry Pete, sorry Rog - King Crimson, XTC, Floyd and Tull have all beaten you to my wallet this year, so I'll pass. I passed on the Tommy super deluxe and never regretted it, and if this only covers My Generation I think it will be the same. See you next year for the Quick One deluxe, maybe.
Agreed. I passed on the 'Tommy' box too. It seems that they want to sell us stuff we already have at high prices. The singles boxes are another example of that.
I can think of lots of ways, they can fill a 5 disc set.. maybe Rahway film footage on a Dvd , creates one disc, or Oates & Lukpac would know, but if there is a 65 era demo disc, I am aware of 1 Things have changed 2 My Generation 3 Magic Bus 4 Call me lightning 5 Circles 6 Do the strip 7 Kill My appetite And maybe 8 You don't have to jerk ? 9 Join my gang 10 It was you- Detours 63 Plus the existing High Numbers studio tracks, is at least 10 songs that we know of 1 I'm the face 2 Here Tis 3 Zoot Suit + The 7 instrumental tunes. + 3 live H Numbers tracks featured on BBC 6 last year, as being for the box set. Plus everything that exists now on the 2002 ? 2 disc deluxe the non album singles, unused R&B songs & the official album in mono & stereo, plus alternate versions of quite a few cuts How is that not enough for 5 discs ? Am I dumb, what am I missing here ? 1. Original LP stereo & mono 2. Non LP songs plus alternates 3. High Numbers studio & live 4. Townshend demos circa 65 5. Dvd High Numbers early WHO
That's often true but when I commented on the price of the singles boxed sets on the band's Facebook page the rather sniffy response was " You don't have to buy it if you don't want to".
the chances of Live material received a boost recently due a decision by the band/management not to have an aged Bob Pridden on the road touring anymore. After all it was 'he' who came up with the last 2 live offerings within the last boxes.
I'll gladly buy the boxset if it's ALL done right this time. Stop the loudness wars, use the best tapes and let the music shine. We all know that much of this material will never be audiophile perfect, but there's no reason we have to cobble together multiple releases (as many of us have done) to make a definitive, or at least better listening experience. True mono, true stereo masters. Let's hope Pete and Roger don't feel the need to add any further 2016 "work" on mixes that have "missing" overdubs. Please, no. Implore Pete to find any and all demos from era. Search the archives for acetates. Check and double check with Talmy for any further material (and make any $$ arrangements to get it). And for sure, include multiple outtakes of songs, even a false start or two and some studio dialogue would be nice as well. Ron
The stereo remixes are the HD remixes that have new overdubs. No new Talmy material. The mastering has been fine going back to at least 2012.
What about the list from the previous page which shows multiple song outtakes, false starts and studio dialogue? I'm not saying we need four versions of Anytime You Want Me, but an additional alternate take and false start would be nice. And you well know that we nutters have to cobble together multiple releases to get the best-sounding mixes of this material. HD tracks, iTunes, SACD, Japanese imports, Hoffman's discs, etc. If this is to be THE definitive statement on My Generation than it has to be damn near perfect. Nothing wrong for wanting it to be so. Ron
What about it? There's not much of interest there, even for diehards. Not in this case, at least for the mono mix. There are multiple releases that sound fine.
