Which of these concept albums do you like best?
No poll? I vote The Who Sell Out over Ogden's.
There's a poll.
Not sure what the concept of "Ogdens..." is??
The Who Sell Out
I'm guessing it's the in-between song gibberish.
Love the Small Faces, and "Afterglow" is one of their greatest tunes. But considered in the context of the concept album, gotta go with The 'oo on this one.
I voted the Who. This is my favorite Who period and I love all the songs that did not make it and were done after before the Tommy concept. Ogdens' is great too, but it's not really my go-to album for them. Plus, as a concept... Who Sell Out is a concept of "pop-art" and underground radio, where Ogdens' is really only half a concept record. Both have innovative cover art though.
"Sell Out" is a great album. Never heard "Nut Flake", so my vote is easy!
I voted for the Who Sell Out. It is one of my favorite albums.
I have not heard either so I flipped a coin.
Sell out by a mile. But Odgen's is great!
I like Ogden's Nut and the Small Faces but The Who Sell Out is my favorite Who album.
It's "only half a concept record" in that the story doesn't encompass both sides. There's nothing unfinished about it.
However, Sell Out isn't much more than half a concept album itself, insofar as the Who got lazy and the jingles petered out halfway through side 2.
I voted for "Sell Out". I like "There Are But Four Small Faces" better than "Ogden's."
Sell Out is a lot of fun, but I rarely make it all the way through to the end. I play it in 3-4 song chunks. Ogdens also sounds better recorded, with more oomph.
Love Ogden's Nut Gone Flake; it doesn't get near the attention it deserves and is a classic....Afteglow and Autumn Stone are amzaing and so much better than Itchykoo Park, which I always thought was way overated. Having said this, though, I have to give the edge to The Who Sell Out...one of the very best Who albums
I like Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, but I love The Who Sell Out.
Really?...Go forth and seek out the music and be saved
BTW, I picked:
Ogden's for me.
I mean I love The Who, one of the best bands ever.... But Steve Marriott, that guy could sing the phone book and I would buy a ticket.
Can't choose...today, it's the small faces. Tomorrow, who knows?!
True. Good points. Still, Sell Out to me feels more like a concept where Ogdens' seems more like one side with random songs with no linkage and one side that does have those qualities.
I love me some Small Faces, but I've always found Ogden's to be a little bit patchy, despite some great moments. The whole Happiness Stan story is a bit daft and Unwin's gobbledygook doesn't do much to enhance the material, IMO. (My deluxe edition is on the way, so I'm looking forward to giving this one a re-evaluation.)
On the other hand, I've always found the Sell Out concept to make for a very enjoyable pop art collage, open ended enough not to get too bogged down. The radio jingle theme does peter out towards the end, but then we get a little glimpse into the future with Rael. Pete was really coming into his own as a songwriter, delivering several heartfelt psych-pop gems, and more recent deluxe editions have revealed a cache of strong bonus material from this period. Sell Out has become one of my big favorites from the Who over the years.
I guess I'm in the minority. Odgens' for me. I lose interest in Sell Out along the way, sometimes sooner than later
