Great taste, but that's no surprise. George Crumb is an exquisite choice.

He surely owned more than 25 (favorite) records...

  7. No doubt but I'm really surprised it wasn't in his top 25

Guess he liked many artists and it's hard to decide the best out of a record collection.

A much bigger surprise is no Scott Walker. He wasn't a massive Beatles fan.

  13. I would agree with Scott Walker especially considering the influence he had on Bowie. I had thought that ha going out with and collaborating with Lennon (and covering Across The Universe and Lennon's Working class Hero) might have made him reevaluate their music especially the 66-70 period.

In Heathen's Afraid he sang: I believe in Beatles, I believe my little soul has grown.

Living a couple of miles from both Dave's birthplace and his childhood home, the word 'vinyls' is nearly as painful to the ear as 'Legos'.

No Pretty Things, after two covers on Pin Ups.
But then, those two covers were singles, so I'm good.

Well even if those were among his favorites, they'd make for a pretty boring list, no?

I know if I were asked to supply a list of my favorite albums for a magazine, that I'd skip a few of the usual suspects to make room for some lesser known gems in order to open a few ears as well as make the article more interesting/less predictable.

Were those really his absolute favorite 25 records of all time? Maybe, but my guess is they were really just the 25 records he liked the most that he felt were unfairly ignored/should be better known by more people than they currently are.

The Beatles and Stones et al, are definitely in no need of any help in that department.

    From the original article:
"There is really no way to do a list of my favorite albums with any rationality...there are just too many to sort through. So, I’ll keep pulling stuff out blindly, and if it’s too obvious (Sgt. Pepper, Nirvana) I’ll put it back again till I find something more interesting. A lot of the rock stuff I have is the same as everyone else’s."

It's good that he still had his Velvet Underground test press LP he had for him brought back from New York.
