My gosh Gary is unrecognizable. He certainly has the spirit down. Thats half the story right there.

Gary Oldman's voice is a little too high-pitched to sound like Churchill, but if they (hopefully) deepen it slightly in post, he'd be perfect... looking forward to this film.

    !!!!!

    Cannot wait.

Seems to be a bit of a Churchill revival going on in recent times -- including (what I'm told is) a campy take on him by John Lithgow(!!) in The Crown. This can only be a good thing; to the extent people can be exposed to the man, the West badly needs reminding about character, grit and determination in the face of barbaric power. Knowing what I think I do about Gary Oldman's views, he may be just the fella to bring this extraordinary man -- whom I believe did more to save the world than any other, and gave us more than a half-century of relative peace & prosperity -- to life on the screen.

Problem with Churchill is "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend". Having said that, Oldman is a great actor, and this could be a great movie.

I quickly glanced at the subject line of this thread but at first I thought it said Gary Coleman as Churchill. Besides being dead I briefly thought, "That should be interesting."

I thought his portrayal of Churchill was excellent and not campy at all. You should watch it and judge for yourself.

Judging by some of the industry trades Oldman is a front runner for an Oscar.

The film of course, won't tell the story of the first fifteen years of his adult life (1893-1908).

Three books written, (including a novel) , 4 first hand warzones Cuba, Sudan, India (twice), South Africa (incl. a hair raising prison break from a POW camp), and the Sturm and Drang years of his political career. He was a — utterly baffling to our modern world — mixture of the liberal left: free trade, free immigration and critic of British war practices and the conservative right: anti Irish home rule, anti Women's suffrage.

That's a film that could have material that an Oscar- worthy writer could turn into a masterpiece. The actor wouldn't need to carry that much of the film!

Saw it tonight. Quick thoughts....it was good, not great. Honestly after reading William Manchester's Alone and the most recent one from 1940 til CHurchill's death, I was hoping for a larger scope of what happened.

But here was my odd thought......this movie would make a great mashup with Dunkirk.
A great editor could merge the two and make a better movie out of both.

I dunno . . . Albert Finney's characterization in The Gathering Storm is my benchmark for portrayals of Churchill.

    Okay. Not great. Too myopic.

Sounds like too much romance and fantasy and not enough historical accuracy from what Ive read.

Ill still see it; but too bad they didnt present more truthfulness about those days.
