The monos are great but I don't care much for the stereo, as they're a bit compressed, cleaned up and boosted - I prefer the originals for stereo.
What are your reasons for classifying them as 'junk'? Claiming 'Everyone hated them' is a bit of hyperbole isn't it?
Indeed...the first 4 mono suck, the next 2 remixes suck...the rest are OK...but, at least they are not (((((((((((((loudified)))))))))))).
That's true. That's why one would have to cobble together the ultimate version of ADHN, for example, to achieve a superior version that hasn't had the bass frequencies summed. That's why I didn't elaborate. I get the feeling most people would rather buy the 2009 and just be done with it, as crappy as it is.
I never listen to the AHDN CD. I’d rather listen to a 1980s UK pressing. I don’t even like the sound of the original UK stereo pressing. This needs a re-do
More specifically.... - 2009 for the first four, if digital is your only option - Canadian "Disque Americ" CD's for original mixes of "Help" and "Rubber Soul" - 1987 CD's for the rest Some have expressed that the 1987's aren't much different from the 2009's for the first four (mono). I guess that the fact that Apple has released these in boxed form only, it kind of negates the need for the 1987's. Help and Rubber Soul are available in two different mixes, so it depends on which one you prefer. Some people do like the 1987 remixes, but I suspect that more folks would prefer the originals.
I think the problem is that the EQ is a bit obnoxious and it makes them seem a bit louder than they need to be. The waveforms reveal that for the most part, the limiting used is not extreme.
I’m resigned to the fact that we’ll never get anything from Apple that will resemble audiophile-like quality, other than the CD and vinyl mono boxes. I expect the White Album box, should it happen, to be similar to the Pepper box, in terms of SQ. After a while, I wonder why I even bother.
I remember reading what Dr. Ebbets said it before 9/9/09, but he did say that he had a chance to hear the new remasters at the time. He said "they're good...they're VERY good" and said he would retire from doing Beatles CDs because of them. I also have heard since that he didn't stay retired for long. I don't really know, as I have no idea how to get his work (save for a couple that I found in used bins over the years). My personal opinion is I love the 2009 monos, and most of the 2009 stereos. The White Album and Abbey Road are the only ones where I prefer older CDs, but I would never say the 2009's weren't good. Just not my preferred versions.
I do prefer the original stereo mixes as they come in the 2009 mono box. I'm curious, (having never heard the Canadian CDs with the same mix) do you feel the older Canadian discs sound better, or are you just saying you prefer that mix?
Except, you're wrong... For example, the 2009 "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" still has headroom. That is not "Loudified"... just bumped up a bit from the original 1987 Now... this is "Loudified"... Metallica "The Day That Never Comes"
