Only a single but the flip-side of 'Running with the Devil' by Van Halen, 'Eruption.'

Yeah, it seems to me that the current trend of "creative" and wildly acclaimed pop albums starts from that one :agree:

David Bowie - Space Oddity. I'm just trying to point out that Bowie really made androgynous glam-rock real. Considering the impact he's had in the big picture, I think that's valid.
The Pretenders - Here we have a chick (woman if you prefer) fronting a rock/punk band without resorting to her sex appeal. Even if it didn't create a movement, they did stake out ground no one had before, on a popular level.
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True. People sat up and (hopefully) realized music could be smart and punk and pop. You really had to bring a little more to the plate after this.

Meet the Beatles changed things if you lived in the U.S.

In the U.K, for example, we already had Please Please Me and With The Beatles.

Good one. Chrissie is never mentioned as a female trailblazer, she doesn't have to push that angle.

The Beatles? Sure, the influence was immediate and broad.
Robert Johnson? No, it was a significant release. But blues were already well established, and nothing much changed substantially with the album compilation.
Tapestry? No. A signpost album in the singer songwriter movement. But it's an evolutionary sound and she wasn't the first to have success as a singer songwriter.

The Kingston Trio. Their self-titled debut wasn't the first folk album by a long shot, but it was the one that got the ball rolling for the folk revival. Bob Dylan (who acknowledged the Trio as an influence), Joan Baez, and numerous singer/songwriters in their wake wouldn't have made it as big, or as early, without the Kingston Trio.
Please Please Me - Beatles. It gave rock'n'roll a shot in the arm by bringing back the raw energy with the addition of more sophisticated harmonies and chord progressions, bringing more emphasis on self-contained bands playing their own instruments and writing more of their own material (as opposed to the manufactured teen idols who did nothing but sing).
Bringing It All Back Home - Bob Dylan. Brought the poetry, storytelling, and socially conscious messages of folk music into rock'n'roll.

Was the Elvis album that important on it's own? Not questioning your opinion just I don't know. I mean was it not really just the singles and TV appearances that really changed things. That's what hooked the kids (did many young people buy albums back then?).

It's like NMTB - the Pistols had done the job before it came out.

And on another tangent, although I think it's the best debut ever, did the VU album change the course of music at the time? Maybe not as so few heard it. It's been an inspiration for many years but did it change anything at the time?

I have to agree. I really don't think that LPs mattered at all in pop music until "With The Beatles/Meet The Beatles"

Anyway, IMO, albums that did change the course of popular music at the time:

Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours - really invented the concept album (long before any 60's pop bands) and the importance of the album as a concept

Kraftwerk - Autobahn - introduced a new type of music to the world. Influenced so many genres.

    Ramones - Ramones.
