Ebert gave this 1986 George Folsey Jr./Lorne Michaels/John Landis flick 1 out of 4 stars. Wrong, great movie. Lots of heart with the Amigos mustering strength to overcome their lack of courage and fight for Santa Poco. A heartwarming piece of cinema that continues to speak about fighting against injustice and the infamous.

  2. I liked then, and like it now. Lots of funny scenes, like Chevy asking his poor Mexican village hosts if they have "anything besides Mexican food?" Or when El Guapo's bandits give him a sweater for his birthday -just lots of funny things in this film.

To heck with Ebert. This movie isn't going to win any awards, but it was a fun movie.

    Loved this scene:

I saw it in the theater as a fifth grader. Always loved it.

    - Rosita: Have you ever kissed a girl?
    - Dusty Bottoms: Oh yeah, sure. Lots of times.
    - Rosita: Would you like to kiss me?
    - Dusty Bottoms: Yeah.
    - Rosita: Well?
    - Dusty Bottoms: What? Now? Here?
    - Rosita: Well, we could take a walk and you could kiss me on the veranda.
    - Dusty Bottoms: Lips would be fine.”

I see it as a companion piece to "Spys Like Us". Both movies are a "tip of the cap" to genre's that had long passed. "Spys" as a Crosby/Hope "Road" movie and "Amigos" as a B Western.

The most I ever laughed in a theater when I saw it in 1986 at age 15.

I've got a R2R radio official promo somewhere, direct from a long gone radio station.
It's probably only 30 seconds long, but if I find it, I'll upload a copy of it.

I was just thinking the other day how I need to get this movie on DVD. I loved it back in the day.

And I agree that it's almost like a companion-piece to Spies Like Us.

It has moments and some good lines. I think maybe the direction and editing just didn't have great comedic timing. It could have been a lot better.

I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out. I actually had to sit on the floor (at least at first) because we couldn't find seats. I think that's the only time that's ever happened to me at a movie.

Funny comedy film that has held up pretty well. It may not be on the level as Ghostbusters, Vacation, Animal House, etc, but it's still very enjoyable.
