I'm with you man, Raven is outstanding. In my opinion, it's the best album of the last 20-30 years.

HCE was good, but a step down for me. A little too poppy, especially the song HCE, it's the only song on the album I dislike. Crossing my fingers...

After listening: Eh... I'll give it more and perhaps in the context of the whole album it'll be better.

  3. Lets remember that he released Perfect Life prior to HCE, which was not representative of the album.

I wasn't really feeling this one until it launched into the big instrumental finale. That part was really great, but the rest of the song I'm not too sure about. Also, Ninet's vocals, especially in the first half, seem kind of weak to me.

Man...you guys are a tough crowd.
I think you would complain if you got hung with a new rope.
I couldn't be more excited about the new album and I love Pariah.
I could listen to Ninet sing the phone book.

Just received a signed print from the director of the "Routine" video, Jess Cope. What was cool is Jess sold these via Facebook and actually corresponded with everyone personally. Kind of neat to read a text saying that she was headed over to Steven's house to pick up the last batch of these signed prints.

Wonderful and gut-wrenching book. I recalled that too when I saw the track title! It'll be interesting to see if that story is referenced in the lyrical narrative.

    "Pariah" is beautiful.

  17. I really like that song. The big chord changes near the end of Ninet's first chorus were a nice suprise and a beautiful touch. The keyboards behind the verse portions remind me of his earlier work with No-Man. There is a peculiar kind of British fatalism and negativity that I hear in a lot of his work, and I think it may limit some of his audience, especially with women. But at least it's not trite.

  18. After a few listens, its growing on me. Though I cringe when I hear 'Facebook'. As discussed in another SW thread, I think his lyrics can be far too literal.

I love that he rails against current media and social trends, but it can lose a timeless quality when he uses words like that.

Oh, and I love the song. I'm not going to let the pop leanings and silly album cover scare me. SW hasn't really disappointed me yet--Raven being the one album of his I rarely go back to despite loving it at first. He typically can mix classic rock sounds with a modern edge and this song fits that.

Plus The Colour of Spring or pop-rock albums of the 80s like Skylarking are awesome too, so I like that he's recalling stuff like that in his music.

I love pariah. I hope the album is in the same vein. He was never going to repeat the last two and a half albums. His recent work on eighties bands 5.1 remixes was always going to be his influences on this one. Bring it on.

The song is not bad, but also not on the same high level like Harmony Korine.
