Gentleman, I would like to pick up a Tom Jones greatest hits CD. While there seem to be quite a number available, I concerned about anything digitally remastered. Does anyone have a suggestion for a somewhat analog sounding CD? Something that has at least a trace of the SH sound would be nice... Thanks for any input, Tom
I have a WG pressing of Golden Hits. I can take it to work tomorrow (if I remember) and tell you how it sounds...
I have the Netherlands import, "The Singles+" (BR Music BS 8137-2). 50 tracks across 2 CDs, cost me less than $20 new. I think the sound is fairly decent on it. The track list is here.
I have the 1997 CD of "The Best Of Tom Jones" on Polygram TV. I'm quite happy with the sound quality.
I remembered! This collection isn't really comprehensive - no "She's A Lady" at the very least. It's got stuff from 1965-1969 from the Decca/Parrot label. Sounds okay to me, but then again, I have no idea how the records sounded to compare. On "It's Not Unusual", seems like a ton of reverb on Tom's voice and a wierd stereo mix. More normal-sounding on "What's New Pussycat?"
I do have the 1997 Best of Tom Jones CD and She's a Lady on my copy drops out but otherwise it sounds great. I have heard "Complete" and that sounds great. Tom's classic works are sonic masterpieces. If you must have "Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow," pick up ERIC's Hard To Find 45s on CD: Pop & Country Classics.
The Complete Tom Jones is interesting. Without knowing anything else, it would have been my first choice based on the vintage (released in 1993). Now that you gentleman have confirmed this, I think I am going to pick up a used copy and give it a shot. Thanks for everyone's input. Cheers, Tom
He was just on Conan 'O Brien last week. I don't know the song he sang, but it was from Tom Jones Reloaded: The Greatest Hits. He still sounds great. I wonder if this means that his next compilation will be titled Tom Jones Revolutions: Even More Greatest Hits.
Beware of any hits collection that's not Universal - with some exceptions, many of those CDs are songs from his early 1980s Canadian TV series.
