Unique players aren't. I don't care what instrument it is.

Then again Tom has played in more successful bands.

Vai is a fantastic guitarist and musician, but I can't listen to more than five minutes of his flashy, over the top style of playing.

That would be same generation by just about any standard.

And Tom is definitely not in the same league.

Tom is not much of a guitarist or musician, and I can't listen to more than five minutes of his under the bottom playing. Well, I could, but I won't.

Depends how you look at it. Purely chops-wise I guess that's right.

But has Bonamassa ever done anything that had the impact of a Killing in the Name or Bulls on Parade?

Bonamassa is a boring blues rocker.

    Not trolling,just offering an opinion...
Tom Morello’s guitar ‘playing’ on Bruce Springsteen’s last album was cringeworthy and utterly embarrassing.
I don’t know much about the guy other than a few RATM songs, but his guitar solos absolutely ruin the electric version of ‘The Ghost of Tom Joad’ and other tracks on that album...horrible squiggly high pitched meandering solos with zero melodic connection to the songs themselves. How Springsteen signed off on them I’ll never know.
    Rant over.

This is the crux. Musical taste is part of the decision.

I saw Tom play with Springsteen a few years back. He brought a crazy amount of energy to what was already a powerhouse of a show. I can understand how some might feel that he doesn't "fit" in the E Street Band, but I thought he brought a welcome edge. Love the E Street Band but they have a sound that hasn't changed much in 30 plus years. Tom updated that sound and made them a tougher rock band.

As to "best"? Dunno. Its all about context, I suppose.

Have to respectfully disagree at least on the "riff maker/songwriter" part. His riffs in (at least) RATM and Audioslave are totally in the same league in my opinion. The point here is that he chose to do solos differently than a typical shred fest approach at the end of 80s. Prior to that he was into that too. IMHO you have to think outside of the regular guitar solo approach to really appreciate what he did and is doing still.
And Tom never considered himself to be in that league as well :) He actually listed Vai as his favorite guitar player in terms of technique multiple times.

All right, I can go with that! Not that I'm a guitar expert or anything, but I won't let that stop my having a strong opinion ;)

Tom rivals anyone for memorable cool riff and unique solos with lots of space in 'em. Just a cool player. Better than Bonnamassa by a mile to me.

His new album isn't that great.

Rage Against the Machine was one of the bands I grew up listening to, so I was always impressed with Morello. I prefer guitarists who come up with unique memorable riffs and solos to ones who are all about technical ability.

That pretty much sums up his entire technique.

I wouldn't consider any of the ones I mentioned as a shredder, and I of course appreciate his style, I love RATM, my point is that his unique style works best in the context of RATM, (metal rock hip hop mix)

take this song, mic check, one of my favorite RATM jams, the brilliant rhythm makes the whole song, and the guitar is part of it all the way, the solo just add to the rest of the vibe in the song, IMO this is what made RATM so great, Morello doesn't stand out a better than the rest of the group, as sometimes is with great guitarist in their bands

in Audioslave, a more classic rock project, his style, most of the time, seemed out of place, kind of forced in, and the riffs were lower quality, but that's just my opinion
