Vernon Reid. I remember the first time I saw Living Colour was when they opened for Guns N' Roses and the Stones at the LA Colisium in the Fall of 1989. He was the best musician on the stage that night by leaps and bounds.

    You know...

I just watched "It Might Get Loud" for the first time the other night. It took me nearly a decade to come around on watching that because I couldn't stand Jack White that much. He HALF won me over in that movie. It wasn't his playing so much. It was just his hunger for knowledge and music. I appreciate that and can identify with it. I don't enjoy the gimmic-laden BS he puts together in his presentation, but in the movie he came out of that tree for 90 minutes in a big way. I won't say just yet that I'm a converted fan, but I don't think I hate him as much.

He still doesn't resonate with me as a player, but I do appreciate his curiosity and hopefully that can turn some of his fanbase on to the music that is of a completely different generation.

Page and Richards love the guy, so what do I know...

but everything I ever heard him play in a live concert..... wow, and they say Page was sloppy ;-)

What can I say? Everything Jack White does or wants to do... Page and Richards already did it, years ago, and in the case of Page, arguably much much better.

Now back to Tom Morello, who I actually like a LOT more than Jack White.

Personally ...in that film I like how he comes off like he is so much more pure an artist and all that than Page and Edge.....then Page plays the opening to Whole Lotta Love and a s**teatin' grin crosses the face of White....he is reduced to a fan.

There are a ton of great guitarists, and there is no best. If the music has guitar then the mood determines who is bezt at any given moment.
    Steve vai one moment
    Jj cale the next
    Stanley jordan another moment
    Etc etc
    Enjoy the flavours

I absolutely love Morello in Rage, Prophets Of Rage and Audioslave. My favourite guitar player hands down.

Not referring to anyone specifically, but can you be a great guitarist if you don't have great songs?

Would Bonamassa be from Morello's generation? If so, Morello is not in the same league as Bonamassa, let alone the masters that came before.

I have trouble considering him just as a guitarist, in the same way as Page, EVH, Jimi, etc.

What made him such an iconic musician was RATM as a unit, Tim C - Wilk - Morello are one of the most amazing rhythm sections ever,

On the other hand people like Slash, Marty Friedman, Dimebag Darrell, as leads, or Hetfield, Malakian, Mustaine, as riff makers/songwriters are way above Morello with the guitar IMO

Personally, alcohol/drug era Slash is the best of the generation and one of the best ever

You won't get well known as a great guitarist if you don't play on great songs.

Morello is a very good effects guitarist. He uses pedals in a clever way and creates some interesting sounds which integrate well into the music.

Depends on how generation is defined, but Tom is 13 years older than Joe.

How about Steve Vai, he is about 4 years older than Tom. Again, I don't think Tom is in the same league.
