whats this about?
If this is a tour announcement, PLEASE come to Boston!!!
Of course, just about anything the man has to say or do is welcome around my home . . .
Don't know but I got the same message. New music? Tour? Seems we'll find out soon! Arrg!!
Obviously he's gone into Pirating.
Good move for him, actually.
Tour would be awesome...especially if he visits the northeast!
If it's a tour I hope he plays enough dates and large enough venues to make getting tickets more reasonable than it usually is when he does very short tours of small venues. There are large US cities he hasn't played in decades. For once it would be nice to get a tour hitting most of the 25 or 30 biggest cities in the US with multiple nights in the bigger cities. However, that will probably never happen.
Still, you would think there would be more financial pressure on acts like Waits to tour more with declining record sales. The new artist economic model in the music industry isn't as viable for acts like Waits, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, etc. that don't tour much.
Every time I hear about Carly Simon's economic situation not being great I keep thinking 30 shows a year for ten years and you have no economic problem anymore.
I have no idea what Tom Waits economic situation is like but he's definitely leaving a ton of money on the table by not touring more.
I think the last thing Tom is concerned about is money.
His songwriting royalties alone make him financially secure, I'd guess.
He toured again in 1999 because he was low on funds.
Plus I think he signed away publishing on lots of his 70s stuff including ol' 55.
Some musicians have been very smart with their money. Many have not been so good at managing their wealth. When you've had people like George Harrison in bad financial shape at various points in time it's really hard to say how financially comfortable Tom Waits is or is not. I have no idea. Just making the comment that the old days of being able to sit at home and make money from record sales (or cd sales) are over for most acts. I would guess that Waits could make as much money from one week of touring as he does from the sales of a new album. For a guy that is at an age where you want to make sure you've got a comfortable nestegg heading into your golden years touring a little more may become tempting at some point.
If true about his publishing rights that would be a drag.
That said, the '99 tour was heaven.
doesnt really seem like it will be a tour from the photo. coming Aug 7.... no idea.
if it is a tour i really want to get some tickets. this guy is worth the money. yeah the '99 tour was one of the most amazing things ive ever seen.
whatever this is, im higly interested.
edit: its a Tuesday as well, normal day for new releases. so... i have no idea.
Uh, with the publishing $ from "Ol' 55" on Eagles' records and that "Downtown Train" song he wrote, he should be fine.
Touring money should be gravy.
And, LOTS of gravy.
I thought Tom was rolling in Frito-Lay dough.
Official release of pirated material?
Kinda wishing for a Big Time DVD release.
Springsteen recording Jersey Girl must have paid to put a couple of kids through college.
It depends on his lifestyle, I'd say
I thought the same thing.
Plus I can't picture Tom Waits spending like Michael Jackson or anything. I thought he was into old junk that he could turn into musical instruments.
He's not exactly living the Hollywood lifestyle.
I suppose he could live quite comfortably on his money just from being a Character actor.
hmm... what's he building in there?
Tom Waits and Royal Caribbean team up for an unforgettable cruise ship adventure?
Maybe Tom's just announcing that August 7 is coming.
well, im excited.
His Facebook-page has gotten quite busy in the past 12 hours!
a) an announcement of a tour
b) a new album in the making /a combination of a and b
c) an new iTunes playlist
d) a dvd-box with a live anthology
Come on... just look at the guy. Dirty old clothes, bad haircut, crappy piano. He's still paying off all those old bar tabs. I'd hand him a dollar if I saw him on the street..poor fella.
I have been getting emails from "Tom Waits" that have been going to my spam. I been afraid to open - due to viruses. Perhaps it's legit.
One subject was;
Tom Waits: I Breathe Better Underwater
