Dedicated thread for the new high-Res [5] Tool albums added to Hdtracks.com in 24-bit 96khz. Thoughts? Comparisons with original Redbook discs or vinyl? Dynamic range numbers have been posted with Undertow being the clear one to avoid. The other three albums posted (no Opiate yet) do appear to have minimal compression, but compression nonetheless.
Listening to Lateralus 24/96 but downsampled to Redbook so I can play it in my CD transport (no file-based streamer in my room right now). It didn't exactly grow extra muscularity over the original CD I have, but I would swear I can hear more detail. Might be that they compressed it slightly to bring those details out, I'm not sure, but it's my goto version now. And maybe I'm misunderstanding your post, but everything I've read says the Undertow remaster/2496 variant is the best of the bunch in terms of improvement over the original CD? I don't have the original CD but listened to the 24/96 the same way I'm listening to Lateralus and it sounded good to me.
That's great people are enjoying Undertow- I was simply referring to the DR numbers posted for it. For me, it's a clear red-flag, but that's me.
As I suspected Lateralus was largely untouched. EQ is almost identical with slightly more compression on the new one. Not even gonna bother with 10k days because it’s probably the album they used to reference the rest of the remasters. Cheers! : ToolBand Proof that the new web release is remastered. The top waveform is from the original 44.1/16 bit CD rip (CDs can’t go to 24 bit) The bottom waveform is the new 96/24 bit The spectrum is below that. The white is the new. The yellow is the old. Notice the extended highs and loudness. Song: Bottom : ToolBand Hope I'm linking the right ones, but Undertow appears to be the most changed of the remasters. I will say that absolutely, DR has its place, but it's not necessarily the arbiter of good/bad. For me, especially on 10,000 Days, I hear less clipping and audible distortion with the new versions versus the original CD I have. Roon rated them as the same DR rating. That album is a bad example IMO, I think it was recorded hot and a remaster is only going to do so much. They sound similar enough to me that it's pretty close, having gone back and forth with it the last couple days.
There is a post on reddit with all five remasters/originals compared. It's linked in the comments somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
....unless a DR12 ends up "remastered" to a DR5, of course. That's an instant dismissal for me. Thankfully that isn't the case with these Tool remasters (they aren't completely brickwalled).
FYI - HD Tracks Tool 24/96 DR #'s Opiate - DR9 10,000 Days - DR8 Lateralus - DR10 AEnima - DR9 Undertow - DR9 These numbers mean nothing to me, The Pot from 10,000 Days sounds glorius, in spite of having a DR6!!!
Crazy how they just started to release their work digitally and on streaming. Might just check em out.
Anyone could post the spectographs to see if 24/96 are legit please? I am interested in Aenima and Lateralus albums.
The numbers don’t look bad to me at all. I’m guessing that they are MFIT. So far I have not read anything negative about them so I have no reason to believe they are bad. There is nothing wrong with a little louder as long as it doesn’t hurt the sound quality.
That's true, but better to check because there are lot of bad "remasters" unfortunately. I am very keen to see the spectogram for 24/96.

I have not heard these yet but I will listen tomorrow night. I will purchase more of them when I get paid. So far I only have 10,000 Days and Lateralus.
I can definitely more detail. Which you would expect, given the higher resolution. Strange that so many can't hear the difference.
I'm in the same boat. Down on my main system, Lateralus sounds so good, so different. I've always struggled with this album - it sounds great but if you want to enjoy it loud, the lead guitar on certain tracks just dominates everything and gets fatiguing. But the 24/96, to me is so crankable, it can be enjoyed at high volume, you get more detail, and yet it's still incredibly musical and emotional, as it should be.
Well, it is different mastering I guess, but looking at the spectrogram seems to be upsampled even from CD or downsampled from DSD. Not so much sound energy above 21kHz. Aenima it's better on that and probably recorded in analog domain in contrary to 2001 Lateralus.
