Good discussion of significant films not yet released on Blu-ray HD:

    http://www.thewrap.com/movies/slideshow/not-feelin-so-blu-10-notable-hi-def-disc-omissions-20243

    The list includes:

    10. The Big Lebowski
    9. Swingers (!!!?)
    8. Jaws
    7. Taxi Driver
    6. Finding Nemo
    5. Titanic
    4. Scarface
    3. Chinatown
    2. Indiana Jones Trilogy (Raiders / Doom / Crusade)
    1. Pulp Fiction

Again, this is their list, not mine. But I was certainly astonished to find that some of these titles still aren't yet out. I understand why Titanic, Jaws, and the Indy films aren't on Blu-ray, knowing how hands-on directors like Cameron and Spielberg are. Trying to schedule the time for these guys to even approve new HD transfers would be problematic.

But the other stuff makes no sense, and I think some of them are already mastered to HD and sitting on the shelf, ready to go. Anybody got any more good candidates for films that should be out on Blu-ray but are not? (And don't mention the original theatrical Star Wars films. We know already.)

Assuming we're leaving out movies announced but not out yet ("Alien" series, "Star Wars" series, "Se7en"), here are some of my candidates in addition to those listed above:

    -"Lawrence of Arabia"
    -"ET"
    -"Abyss"
    -All unavailable Pixar
    -"Ben-Hur"
    -"Jurassic Park"

Hmm well as for Jaws we've had what, two attempts DVD wise and there was still a lot of room for improvement there. So I dont reckon Spielberg is that into revisiting and perfecting his old works.

    Here's hoping though.

I've got the HD-DVD of Pulp Fiction and Big Lebowski and both look very nice. They'll make it to Blu-Ray eventually. I think Finding Nemo already has a release date on Blu-Ray, so its coming very soon.

I echo your !!!? regarding Swingers. It's a good movie, but seems way out of place on that list.

Josey Wales is among my most wanted Blu-Ray's as well. To quote the movie, "You're wanted, Wales".

Somewhat OT, but Thedigitalbits just posted a list of movies not even on DVD yet.

    http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/adamjahnke/jahnke082010.html

    Megaforce
Napoleon - the 1927 cut restored to 5.5 hours
    Let it Be (natch)
    Metropolis - Moroder's version
    Song of the South
    The Keep
    The Magnificent Ambersons
    Kafka
    Light Of Day
    Star Wars Holiday Special
Big Time (Tom Waits concert from '88)
The Devils (which already has a commentary recorded)

Finding Nemo is rumored on Blu for November 9 (along with Toy Story 3). Indiana Jones' earlier adventures were rumored for next year. Lebowski was on a recent poll by Universal of catalog titles.

On the whole, there's so much coming out in the next three months that I won't be able to keep up as it is. It was easier with DVDs, say in '98 and '99 because sites used to undersell each other all the time on new releases (remember DVDExpress?). Blus prices make it harder to pick up 3-4 a shot. I don't mind the slower releases.

  12. Lots of good choices already mentioned, but I'm looking forward to MGM's financial situation getting straightened out so that we can get the remainder of the James Bond films on Blu-ray.

I'd also like to see some of the Hammer horror films get the Blu-ray treatment.

    And Hitchcock's Rear Window.

Definitely. Those are no-brainers. I think at least the top 10 Hammers should be released (maybe as double-features), plus all the Hitchcocks.

I also think there should be a law that all the feature films chosen by the National Film Registry should be released on Blu-ray, even if it's just a limited edition. There's quite a few on that list (including the Sergio Leone classics) that aren't out.

  22. Hitchcock's "Psycho" has already been slated for release on October 26th in a 50th Anniversary Edition...the UK pressing has been reviewed on www.blu-ray.com!:edthumbs:
