Surely it can be fixed digitally?

Perhaps it could be but, considering how much work he's done for film restoration, he might well be against it philosophically.

Seriously Blu Ray's are DVDs. They just have higher resolution. The are not exactly competiton for DVD, as they are the same thing, but simply an HD version.

Many call them Blu ray DVDs.

BD are like DVDs but they aren't DVDs. Just because one supersedes the other doesn't mean it's the same. Otherwise DVDs are just SVCDs and SVCDs are just VCDs....

DVDs are read by red laser. BDs require blue laser, so they are not DVDs at all IMO.

When did this DVD (blu ray /same source, methinks) come out.
It must be a good few years ago.

This imo is his definitive film, shame it could not be restored.
The first bond film is 50 years old and looks great.

Whoops - my North America-centrism came through - I didn't realize we were talking non-NA product!

To clarify: as fae as I know, there's no legit US single-movie "BTTF"! :)

I recently got the U.K. edition of Mulholland Drive. It'll trickle out in North America relatively soon, I suspect.

  13. At least Ambersons got a DVD release finally. Could have sworn that I saw Bubba Ho Tep but I could be dreaming

  14. Why isn't Ambersons worth a BD release?

The original Star Wars trilogy, as they were seen in theaters in 1977, 1980, and 1983.

Badlands, but we know that one is coming from Criterion soon. Need to complete my Malick blu-ray collection.

I'd also really really really like a Region 1 blu-ray of "Touch of Evil".

Why isn't Ambersons worth a BD release? well the print they released on dvd
    isn't anything great,and a BR wouldn't offer any improvement
They say they are still working on it,and we will have to wait till they feel they
have elements which would make sense to release on BR

Not sure this could be done, otherwise all vertical scratches could be removed from all films. The issue is, what information do you use to cover up the scratch, as it obscures the same area for the entire shot? I believe scratch removal uses information from adjacent frames if the scratch is only in that location in one frame; it doesn't create new information from nothing. Otherwise, using a retouch artist would be likely a cheaper option and it would likely look weird in motion as well.

As much as I'd like these, I've resigned myself to the fact that they're not going to happen as long as George Lucas is alive.

I know the last three are out there for imports but I want US releases without the horrible rating logos on the front. I already know what the content of each film is. Plus they are just horrible looking.

  24. Interesting but I suspect that, like Kane, there isn't much TO work with as the negatives have been MIA for years and all the trims/discarded scenes, etc. no longer exist.

I know Welles tried, at one time, to gather the cast to recreate some of the footage but that would have been quite an effort as well.

The condition it is in, is the condition it is in--unless they come across some obscure new source it's unlikely to improve however having said that the print they do have would still look better in BD than in DVD--it might not be a huge improvement but it would be an improvement.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that an independent company has licensed "Touch of Evil" for a BD release before the end of the year.

Can't remember where I read it. Maybe I am losing my mind...
