I admire many of his films, especially the 1970s films, but I can't do ten. These are my favorites:

    McCabe & Mrs. Miller
    (1971)
    The Long Goodbye (1973)
California Split (1974) -- needs to be restored to original length and edit.
    Thieves Like Us (1974)
    Mash (1970)
    Countdown (1968)
    Fool For Love (1985)

These are very good films but I wouldn't call them favorites:

    Popeye (1981)
    Images (1971)
That Cold Day In the Park (1969)
    3 Women (1977)
Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean (1982)
    Vincent and Theo (1990)
    Short Cuts (1993)
    Kansas City (1996)

I dislike Buffalo Bill and the Indians. It looks spectacular but it's bad history. Profoundly wrong-headed history.
I also dislike Nashville and understand why the country music capitol hated it so much, although I love Karen Black and Ronee Blakely in it.

I agree exactly with this list except I haven't seen "Countdown" or "Short Cuts". "Nashville" is one of the most overrrated movies ever.

paul newman really wanted to work with altman and he was disappointed that their two films (quintet and buffalo bill) kind of went awry. I like buffalo but quintet is a bit of a slog, not sure what happened

I've read that Altman did not want to direct it.

I just picked up Fox's 2015 Steelbook-packaged Blu-ray of M*A*S*H (I assume it's the studio's '09 mastering), and I was astonished that the transfer looked as good as it did. I've never seen a TV broadcast that looked more than barely passable. That quality was what Altman seemed to want, though.

I assume you've got this, too. What do you think? Can the source print be tidied up any further? I grabbed the Criterion McCabe & Mrs. Miller Blu-ray having never seen the movie before, and it looks great to me ─ with the understanding of Altman's intentional exposure to the elements of the film negative.
