there's a lot of great music on that list--and a lot of great music I'd be hard-pressed to identify as 'ambient,' even in leading context. but wherever it happens, any hyping of Charlemagne Palestine is alright by me. and I'm happy to see acknowledgment in print that ambient 3 is both great and also not an Eno album. note that these are both good examples of what I'd consider 'not ambient.' like oval. (oval?!) that Hood record is fantastic. if you're into the Beaver and Krause/Ariel Kalma/on land school of 'ambient' slow music combined with field recordings, you will absolutely love it.
Interesting list... I've only got about 14 of those titles (and there are a couple more that have been on my wishlist for quite some time).... but I might have to check out some of the other titles that I'm not familiar with. Thanks for posting
top five: Deuter - Silence is the Answer Walter Carlos - Sonic Seasoning Klaus Schulze - Audentity The KLF - Chill Out Collectif Sin - Tramontane
I'm not saying there isn't some good music on there, but that list is ********. It looks like it was started by someone with some knowledge and finished up by a college intern that got into this music 2 weeks ago. It pretty much ignores a lot of important stuff that happened during the 80s and 90s in favor of latecomers and includes a bunch of things that aren't even ambient per se. Not including a single Robert Rich album, for example, proves Pitchfork is utterly clueless.
Not sure if it was mentioned on here but Psychonavigation Records just reissued Zenith, the collaboration album by Carlos Vivanco and Tetsu Inoue. If you've heard of Fax Records, this album was originally released on that label in 1994. This is a really beautiful album full of ambient textures and some tasteful sequencer work. I highly recommend it. You can purchase the CD and or lossless download (FLAC, WAV, ALAC, etc) here: Zenith, by Psychonavigation Records » Btw, the reissue is also very dynamic, see the DR info I uploaded here: Album details - Dynamic Range Database »
All Fripp & Eno releases. Most all Eno albums. New Daniel Lanois album. Numerous Fripp solo works. Many others, but these are my faves.
Yeah, I assumed that they would miss some important albums and figured that some wouldn't fall into the ambient category... I'm only through the first 12-14 so far, as I've been listening to most of the music along the way. I thought the private press release was great, and the Deathprod album is excellent.
I remember liking that Deathprod album at the time but haven't heard it in awhile. The Rune Grammofon label used to put out a lot of interesting stuff. I haven't heard anything from them in over ten years though. At one point there was a Deathprod CD boxset that I always meant to get but never got around to buying. I think there was also a Biosphere collaboration album that I haven't heard either.

Thanks Patient_ot. I couldnt find the Jeff Greinke album posted on your blog but I did find this........ ....and rather good it is too Thanks again.
Greinke has a large catalog dating back to the early 80s. I'm a huge fan of his work from then through about 1993 or so. I don't know his later catalog well other than Virga. I thought that CD was very good. Maybe one day he will get around to setting up a Bandcamp page with all his OOP releases. The album you posted there appears to be his most recent one from 2013, which I have not heard.

I´m not an ambient music fan but I love "Sunrain" from ASHRA "New Age Of Earth" (1977). Sublime song.
