Anyone else watching this? I have one more episode to go. It's a totally bizarre thriller/procedural set in New Zealand. Elisabeth Moss plays a detective trying to track down a missing (and pregnant) 12-yr-old girl. Holly Hunter and Peter Mullan (I recognized him as "Mother Superior" from Trainspotting) turn in some great over-the-top performances. Written and created by Jane Campion.

It just aired on Sundance last month. I can't believe it's streaming already.

Are Holly Hunter and Elisabeth Moss speaking as if they were native New Zealanders?

Moss speaks with the accent. Hunter's character is American.

We watched it with close captioning on so we wouldn't miss anything...very bizarre miniseries.

Did you guys like it? I've watched one episode so far and unsure about going all the way to the end

I watched all seven on Netflix over the weekend. I really liked it a lot. Definitely reminded me of Twin Peaks as much as any show I've watched. With some of the best elements of The Killing as well.

Wonderful place, but this quite silly series will not help NZ tourism
All the inhabitants seem to come from Deliverence.
    Well shot
    Mumbled dialog
    Jane Campion feminism
Much trumpeted over here on BBC2, the audience fell away in droves.

I enjoyed it, yet it was surely overrated. As you say, well shot.

We started and watched three or four eps but our interest waned and gave up.

Top of the Lake season two will start filming December and will be released sometime in 2016 - sweet! The original writers Jane Campion and Gerald Lee return, with Campion doing the directing. This time the setting is somewhere in Australia and it looks like Nicole Kidman will have a role. Looking forward to it.

How could they make a sequel to that series? It was a pile of crap (IMHO of course). Why was the old Scottish dude whipping himself, and how did the feminist commune contribute to the plot in any meaningful way?

I thought it was very good and given the number of awards the series has won, I'd say it's been a critical success. I'm pleased they're making another series.

I dug it. Moss was great. It was beautifully photographed and weirdly hypnotic.

My wife and I really enjoyed it. It will be very interesting to see where they take the premise next.

Is there another season other than the first?

It was supposedly shot starting in December of 2015 with Elizabeth Moss returning and Nicole Kidman joining the cast. No start days has been named.

China Girl out now on BBC iPlayer. I watched it through - perhaps not as unique as the first series, but still an interesting watch.

I dunno, it kind of meanders around many subplots, but this is what makes it interesting and unique, especially since all the disparate threads are interwoven into the whole by the end. This series has to be binge watched for all the elements to remain fresh in one's mind. Above all, don't expect a straight crime solving police procedural - it's about much more than that.

Elizabeth Moss again shines in the lead role, but special mentions must also go to David Dencik, Gwendoline Christie and Nicole Kidman (with crazy cat-lady hair!).

Also, it feels like it's been set up for a further season.
