Is "Sam the Record Man" still the best in Toronto?. I havn't been there since 1996, but a close friend is visiting Toronto over Easter and is looking for some sources for both red book Soundtracks/classical and SACDs (all genres). Plus any pointers to Used/2nd hand sources in Toronto would be appreciated.

Sam's is good; nearby is HMV which also has a large selection. The best used record store in Toronto IMO is Vector Records at Yonge and Eglinton. They have a fairly large selection of used classical although I don't know about soundtracks. There are others all over Toronto also.

I've seen lots of SACD's at stores like Future Shop and Best Buy (electronic chains). I don't know whether Sam or HMV has a large selection of these.

Sam's is great for catalog stuff - I talked to an old employee friend of mine who still works there and he says their aim is to try to stock at least one of every release available through N.A. regular channels. That said, their multi-channel section is very poor - HMV's is much better.

I don't correct spelling but if we are giving directions here it is Vortex records.

I used to work recently for HMV - their selection in hi-rez is TERRIBLE!! It has actually decreased. Really sucky! (this is the Mega-store I am talking about) Same for vinyl there. None of the recent Rhino's that Kevin Grey has cut for eg. Viable alternatives...I'm not sure anymore, but I know HMV ain't it! (Record Peddler, where are you?)

That's ok. A friend's mum used to refer to Led Zeppelin as Ted Leppin. As in "oh that guy you like so much is playing the Roxy Friday - Ted Leppin?"

Sonic Temple has a classical section. Yonge & Empress (1/2 block N from the North York Centre subway stop)
