Troggs Any Way That You Want Me - Moog in 1966?

The conventional wisdom is that the first pop recordings featuring the Moog synthesizer were released in 1967:

I have always assumed the above to be true. However, what the heck is the synth-string-sounding keyboard instrument in Any Way That You Want Me, from 1966, if not a Moog?

 

That's not from 1966. It's a terrible re-recording from the '90s.

 

Yes. And in the 1966 recording, it's a cello doing the part.

 

Ah, that figures. I heard this version on Peter Noone's show on Sirius XM 60's on 6 and assumed it was period correct. Also, the YouTube video was mislabeled as the "original version."

 

Never listen to Pete. In fact, send him a note that I'm boycotting everything about him until he remembers to get the second verse of East West straight in his shows. He seems to have this thing about not singing the "swell joints......lush girls, ogling and eyeing".....verse any more...... and that was one of the best verses in the record.
