Am looking to start some serious CD collecting again, and want to start my collection afresh.Trouble is that Amazon and such sites all mainly sell just the latest remaster of a said album, rather than older or original versions. There are some good albums that have not been remastered that i have brought new..L.Ronstandt-/Simple dreams..B.Raitt /Nick of Time..T.Chapman/Tracy Chapman but these are few and far between.
What i would like to know is two fold..1. Are there any websites selling 'new' older versions of CD's?
    2. Can anyone recommend any good albums (non-compressed,nice dynamic sounding) that are the original mastering and haven't been subject to a remaster?

In order to find older pressings on Amazon you need to input their barcodes into the search.

  3. Snatched these two from a very generous guy, who oddly said he hated both of these discs. I am finding that doing exactly as @robertzombie suggested would be the best way to find the "non's" in the online world.

Discogs...message the seller if there's any possibility of ambiguity.

If you want new, then you could be in trouble. If you want used, but in good condition, then it's kinda easy.

    1. Yes, but you will pay a premium, read off the wall crazy, for factory sealed on Discogs and eBay.
    2. Yes. Any in particular?

Tried barcodes without success.Putting in the album code was a bit more productive, but most are just used rather than new.

As a seller, I put in the barcode to list my CD properly. I have found that does NOT insure that it gets listed under the proper version/description. When that happens I describe the version I am selling in the condition notes. On the other hand, often when it DOES properly list a CD under the version I am selling, that version does not even show up during a artist/title search making it totally invisible to anyone looking for that particular version.

In short Amazon's listing and search functions are in disarray. Yes, it is best to directly ask the seller for any details. I have answered inquiries about matrix numbers, manufacturing sites etc, from avid collectors. On the other hand, many of the "professional" vendors have such a huge inventory which are managed by their employees, they have no idea about why anyone would even care what version is being sold, and do not know that there are even differences.

Some establishments are so big they do not even get around to answering your inquiries.

Go to a record show. Do you have those in England? The CDs cost next to nothing and you can check which pressing and the condition of the discs in person.

Just looking for recommendations of good sounding albums that have not been subject to a later remaster. And as such would be the default being offered on Amazon (and also as such should be reasonably priced)

As mentioned, finding new ones is tricky (and possibly expensive). Most of these discs have been OOP for years. One of the advantages of the cd medium is that it is very durable, so it is easy to find used copies in good shape. By insisting on new, you are failing to take advantage of that fact.

I once remember that about 2 months ago, I purchased "original" CDs from a seller on eBay. They were instead the 1999 Eagles Ted Jensen "Loudness War Specials"... The seller gave me a refund, claimed they used eBay's barcode finder (I don't the the proper term, they put the item numbers in, which gave them the year they were manufactured). They allowed me to keep the CDs, but I knew they looked like originals. Sliver CDs, plain, text and the 1980s Asylum Records logo. I've noticed that more CDs seem to reprint the original CDs, especially Columbia and Warner Bros. Oddly enough, I always seem to find these "original reissues" at Big Lots and Walgreens... And I am looking for non-remaster CDs too. I know the pain.

Tracy Chapman's debut has never been remastered. A new copy will have the same 1988 mastering

    £3 on Amazon UK

Are we talking new sealed CD's ?.I can normally source the best masters of any given album if i buy used. Was just trying to do the same 'new'..Probably not viable i know.
Ps..Sometimes as you know a barcode or album code is not enough to get the exact mastering. For exmaple Bob Ludwigs West German mastering of Dire Straits-Brothers In Arms has the same codes as a differently mastered West German version.Only the matrix number on the inside of the disc can seperate the two.

From US Amazon you should be able to obtain Van Morrison's Common One, Inarticulate Speech of the Heart, and Beautiful Vision. Never remastered here (although they were remastered elsewhere) and they sound great--well, maybe not Beautiful Vision but that's the recording.

The original mastering of Brother in Arms is well and truly out of print. It would be extremely difficult to find it new. Something in mint condition is the best you can hope for on a reasonable budget. And there is more than one original mastering.

@enfield I'm not sure about what music you like, but some good original CDs- Don Henley's first three albums on CD, Prince's 1978-1989 CDs, and Bob Seger's original press CDs from the 1980s are excellent to my ears!

whoops, I should have been more specific; sorry. Since a date of purchase was not quoted, I just mentioned that, even in 2017, Chapman's album is still the same.

Back on topic, I'm afraid that, as time consuming as it is, it depends on the album you're looking for. If the old mastering is still in print, a thread on SH.tv will tell you so.

Thanks.Have got the B.Ludwig 1985 W.G in near mint..Would still have loved it new and sealed. But knew it was unlikely.
This looks like a gap in the market.A record label that could make re-pressings of the best masterings of classic albums?? Or maybe the original labels doing re-pressings of classic masterings, rather than just offering re-masters in new form.
