This belonged to my father and dates from the late 70's, possibly early 80's. (Technically I don't know if this makes it vintage or not.) From an appearance standpoint it looks brand-new, and I know it was rarely used and well-cared for. It's built like a tank. Unfortunately, when I hooked it up, plugged it in, turned it on and attempted to play a tape, the transport mech seems to be seized up. The play, fast fwd, and rewind buttons will stay depressed for a moment but the tape doesn't move and then the button pops back up again. It appears to be trying to move the tape but failing.

I took the chassis off to look inside but I know very little about what to look for, how to isolate the problem part, or how to fix (or even if it's possible to fix).

Does anyone have any advice on what to do from a DIY standpoint? I know I could bring it in to a shop but if I can avoid that I'd like to. I could always take some photos and provide them but I don't know if that'd be any help.

I tried several different tapes, so rule out the tape itself as a problem.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

New Jersey Factory Service is a Teac/Tascam specialist and used to be the east coast Teac factory repair center. Contact them and see if they can help you get it running again.

Duly noted. I thought I'd post though on the off-chance that someone might say, "Ah, nine times out of ten a seized transport is because of the fribble-widget. You can get a replacement at your local hardware store for $1.99 and replace it yourself with a screwdriver."

Thanks Kent. How likely is it though that they'd dispense free advice over the phone or via email when they could potentially make money by advising I ship it in for service? Guess there's only one way to find out...
