No choice...the back of my TT is so close to the wall that it won't allow me to lift the lid high enough to operate the TT. I've had to remove the steel hinges so I can lift it off completely. That said, I would still remove the lid even if I could lift it high enough.

I take it off when listening as putting it back on whilst playing would be a PITA and an accident waiting to happen. I don't tend to listen to more than 3 albums in a row.

  3. Your rig will most likely sound better with it off.

I have a Dual 1225 table in a CS18 case. I have to take the dust cover off otherwise an LP won't fit and the tone arm can't move.

Always down - cleaned records, dusty room.

My VPI (as all models do) comes without a dust cover. Therefore, listening session are coverless. However I always keep a can of compressed air nearby just to blow dust off before each listening session. My records are cleaned and dusted before each play. System works for me.

Rega RP6. Dustcover either down or completely off, depending what else I'm doing at the time.

All my record playing life I have kept the dust cover down when listening...I may try it up for a while just to see how the other half lives :)

I remember reading about a little demo many years ago - they reduced the tracking force to something like .10 gram, put the plastic lid down, and then rubbed the top of the cover with a cloth - the tone arm rised up in the air towards to cover. Static electricity was the cause.

That's why I always have the cover up.

I use a Linn LP12 and have always played with lid off until recently because of arthritis in my hands its been lid down.
    Lid off still sounds best.

  12. Sorry to hear about the arthritis; hope you get some help with it! Enjoy your music

    Thanks for your kind words.
Not a lot they can do about it except more pills and injections that don't really help much anymore.

Off! It opens up the sound - unmuffles it!

Is the case for both your RP1 and 1200? I also have an RP1 and will try it cover off tonight.

Yes, both - though the p1 is my go to table.

    Catcher10 I like records, and Prog...duh

Off, but only because the counter weight I use is a larger one and bumps the side when it gets close to the center of record. I'd like one of those covers with the side bump out, I think Technics had that.
Need to look online....I never really heard a difference up/off or down. Clearly it "looks" better off, more hi-fi'ish, so that makes your brain think it sounds better off.
But I never knew dust on your records actually sounds better???

I almost always leave mine up - must be lazy. Haven't heard any difference down. Looks the best off, but then I'll likely step on it. Now, I'll have to try a critical listen to see if I notice any difference.

On a side note, ever since I got my GrooveTracer subplatter* on my RP6, I store the felt mat in my record pile when not spinning, so I can admire the beauty of the GT under the glass platter. Definitely helps with my newfound appreciation of the RP6, which then translates into a better listening experience because of enhanced pride of ownership.

*The stock plastic subplatter is an embarrassment on a $1,000+ table IMHO.
