turntable setup question

Hello. As a vinyl novice who is currently using his dad's old turntable, I would like to, at least for now, be sure I am being 'safe' and not harming the LPs I play. Can anyone give me an explanation of how I can check everything - setup, stylus, etc - to make sure it isn't imparting damage on the vinyl. Maybe I should have a bit of advice for optimum performance (?)... It's an old setup, including the stylus... Thanks.
