Two shows on ABC in the late 80s...

The Richard Lewis/Jamie Lee Curtis sitcom "Anything But Love" changed tone and secondary characters between the first and second seasons. The magazine where the characters worked changed dramatically, with Ann Magnuson coming in as a quirky editor.

One of my favorite shows, "Max Headroom" tried to soften up in the second season. The wardrobe and sets were noticeably brighter and modern, where the first season was very grungy and post-apocalyptic. They also upped the romantic angle between reporter Edison Carter (Matt Frewer) and his colleague Theora Jones (Amanda Pays).

Did NBC ever get to shooting a four-camera-studio-audience version of "Up All Night" with Will Arnett and Christina Applegate as they planned?

Seaquest DSV- here is a quote from wikipedia:
the first season dealt with issues like ecology, exploration of the sea, environmental radicals, advances in technology, and political intrigue, the second season featured episodes involving genetic engineering, aliens, parapsychology, Time travel, and various "monsters of the week" (including killer plants, a dragon worm, a prehistoric crocodile and ancient demons.)

Mama's family was initially on NBC with Rue McClanahan and Betty White as supporting cast. Show got canceled and moved to syndication 2 years later. By that time Rue and Betty were on the Golden Girls and kids were dropped from the cast. A nosy neighbor was added and a new show was born.

No one mentioned Three's Company and Alice (unless I missed it) where in both shows a cast member was replaced twice? Also, in Three's Company, the Ropers were replaced by Don Knotts when they went to do their own failed sitcom and then weren't allowed to return back!

Concerning "Three's Company" it underwent another retooling when it became "Three's A Crowd," with Janet and Terri leaving and Jack moving in with his girlfriend (he wanted to marry her, but she didn't want to get married because of her own parent's marriage). The one thing I didn't like was that Jack's girlfriend shortly appeared before the end of "Three's Company" and there didn't seem to be any development between the two. She was just there and Jack fell in love with her. To me, it would have worked better for Jack and Janet to be the ones to fall in love, and to have that develop over the last season.

Baywatch Nights, that went from a detective show in season one, to an X Files ripoff in season two.

Probably not exactly what the OP was discussing but the bastardization of Night Gallery by including chopped up episodes of the nearly unwatchable paranormal show the Sixth Sense was an abomination.
