U2 on MFSL

  1. What is the catalog number of that CD, and the matrix code? Total Time? Peak Levels?

Is this a WG for US pressing (PDO silver hub) or a WG Sonopress pressing for Europe/Germany (clear hub, Sonopress in matrix)?

That info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I could see how the P33 and the Europe CD would be the same mastering. Island Records in these territories were manufactured and distributed by Polygram, while WEA had their own masterings of the Island stuff for the U.S., that Barry D. mastered a lot of. Many of these wound up as targets and Japan for U.S. CD's that are completely different than the Polygram versions.

  3. I should clarify something I said (poorly) earlier:
The first 2 U2 cds I like on the French pressings are 'Boy' and 'October'.

I reread what I said earlier and it looked like I was saying that
I prefer French cds to MFSL on 2 titles, but this is NOT the case.

In this thread, we talked about the WG version of "Unforgettable Fire". In post #36, I said:

I'll check the total time and peak levels later.

Not to thread crap since you seem to be concerned with cd versions, but if you have vinyl playback you should check out the original vinyl DMM release of The Joshua Tree. It has bass that's missing from the MFSL. It's a lot cheaper too.

I found this old thread using the search function. My question is with the recent release of the remastered "The Unforgettable Fire" is the MFSL still the best sounding version? Also I want the best version possible of "The Joshua Tree" without paying big bucks. I assume the MFSL disc is still the champion, is there a reasonably priced alternative that gives you most of the sonic benefits? Thanks.

I think the first Japan cd of both, 'Fire' and 'Joshua Tree' are highly regarded. Both probably sell for less than the MFSL's.

Someone on the @U2 website has just done a comparison between three different masters of The Unforgettable Fire. Read it here:
    http://www.atu2.com/news/the-three-...guide-to-the-unforgettable-fire-remaster.html

His conclusion is that the remaster sounded better to him on 5 songs, with 3 songs where the MFSL sounded better (and two ties).

The MFSL, the USA, the Canadian and W. Germany original pressings all lost out to the Japanese 1st pressing catalog P35D-20034 when I compared them. I seriously doubt another CD will beat this one.

If I remember correctly, you also prefer the Japanese P35D-20002'Unforgettable Fire' to the MFSL too, Dave!?

So the P35D-20034 (TJT) and P35D-20002 (TUF) are the best choices? Any info on good places to order these (also what are the going prices) would place me forever in your debt! :)

Dave, I received my copy of "The Joshua Tree" P35D 20034 today (many thanks to Darcy for supersonic shipping of a nice cd! :righton:). All I can say is you're right, this import blows away every version I had previously heard. Thanks for the help!

For the records, there's another mastering of Joshua Tree on my cd - at least these values doesn't match any of the releases i've seen posted here.

Don't have the disc on my hand now so i can't provide matrix information, however it's a 1987 release distribuited in Italy at the time. Notice on the CRC values that first disc has 4 tracks that doesn't match, while the second match completely.

Will like to know the peaks for the Japan P35 - highly regarded but no peaks fount for it.

I think the drums sound really bad on the War lp (the original). I haven't heard the album any other way but I'd be surprised that much could be done about that. They sound like someone's playing cardboard boxes to me.
