I did another shoot out between the MFSL CD and this LP and the vinyl easily wins.
I've bought a few used copies of the Joshua Tree (domestic and foreign) and each had some kind of noise with playback > maybe just my bad luck. So a few years ago I decided to buy a sealed original issue from a seller on eBay > it plays absolutely quiet and sounds great.

I have both the 2 LP reissue as well as a couple of US DMMs, and they all sound better than the CD. I do prefer the reissue LPs over DMMS. They sound much fuller and open than the DMMs.

Just picked up a UK copy with this deadwax:
    (stamped) U 26 A-3U-1-4-4 (handwritten) Townhouse DMM
    (stamped) U 26 B-1U-1-3-27 (handwritten) Townhouse DMM
Will post how it sounds when I have a chance to give it a spin.

I just recently got another US DMM cut and was comparing to see which I would keep when I noticed that the deadwax info on both was dramatically different.
    My original copy has:
    Side 1:
    ST-IL-876295-A DMM MASTERDISK 4-3 g-SM1-4 Triangle 15840 B-26817ADMMSPAR
    Side 2:
    ST-IL-876296-A DMM 4-1 MASTERDISK Triangle 15840-X 0- B-26818-A DMM SPAR

    My newer one has:
    Side 1:
    ST-IL-876295-A DMM MASTERDISK 2-1
    Side 2:
    ST-IL-87876296-A DMM SP 2-2 MASTERDISK

Why such a dramatic difference? They sound pretty similar as far as I can tell. The second one is cleaner overall.

I just did a shootout between a copy similar to the one quoted and this:

    STIL-876295-1A G1

    STIL-876296-1A G1 A25

Not a DMM. FWIW, the DMM sounds better. Both sounded terrible at moderate/low volume levels. Like the band was playing in a giant cardboard box. Cranked up it actually sounded good to great, live even.

Exactly! It's very subdued at first listen but crank up something like "Exit" and everything seems to open up. I don't think you can beat these DMM issues.

Anybody know what the SPAR designation refers to?

Regarding how to ID the original first UK pressing, I found time ago this infos from an Italian web-site (all written in Italian language, so I will try to be clear with a translation...sorry for my poor English...).

There seems to have been produced many "variants" (due to different text on back cover and missing credits reference on label) but held that the first UK pressing has these features.

    - UK ID code: U26.
    - Record: custom label, side B without asterisk after the song "Red Hill Mining Town";
    - Gatefold Cover: 8 lines of thanks on back cover without "Special Thanks" and no asterisk after the song "Red Hill Mining Town", barcode.
    - Black inner;
    - Gatefold insert with lyrics and photos without "Additional Rhythm Guitar: Daniel Lanois" and no asterisk after the song "Red Hill Mining Town".

No info regarding the dead wax...

I have the second run regarding the vinyl, the one with the asterisk after the song "Red Hill Mining Town". If you need I can post the dead wax later...

    Hope this help.

I have looked at an awful lot of pressings of the Joshua Tree since I started this thread, and the most common deadwax I have seen is the same as Record 1 I first posted, with only the Posi number changing from... Posi 2 ~ up to Posi 7 ~.

    Record 1
    U2-6-A Posi 5 ~
    U2-6-B Posi 3 ~

I actually saw one LP with U2-6-A/U2-6-B with only this symbol ~, so there are a lot of UK variants out there.

I have this version, purchased March 16th 1987

    Dead wax info is

    Side one
"U 26 A-2U-1-2" machine stamped Looks like a handwritten dash between 26 and A and again after the 2
    and
"Town House DMM" handwritten and stamped "D" after the DMM

    Side two
    "U26 3-1U-1-4: machine stamped
    and
stamped "D" followed by "Town House DMM" handwritten

I wouldn't listen to the 180g reissue if you gave me one, the reissue cd issued at the same time sounds like crap.

If you check carefully, you will see that the 3 is actually a B.

Yes, correct, there are an awful lot of pressings of this album. The one I have has the following dead wax:

    Side 1: U 26 A-1U-1-1-11 D
    Side 2: U 26 B-2U-1-2-11 11 Town House(hand etched) DMM D

On The Joshua Tree theme, another 1987 soundboard has just become available to buy at $5 for a 320kbps audio quality download at Wolfgangs Vault.
This time it's from one of the September MSG shows,i haven't downloaded yet,but reports from a U2 site say it sounds great.

I had the remastered LP and sold it--the treble boost hurt my ears.

That sounds like my old Columbia House LP, which wasn't bad but not impressive-especially against the DMM.

I'm still stuck deciding which DMM to keep, they seem to be nearly identical.

I just received a First press? UK copy of this on vinyl, comes with original black inner and poster. Deadwax info is:

    (stamped) U 26 A-2U-1-1 (handwritten) Townhouse DMM

    (stamped) U 26 B-2U-1-1 (handwritten) Townhouse DMM

With "D" stamped on each side of the deadwax

Looking forward to spinning this tonight.

Regarding how to ID the original first UK pressing, please check my post #35 here above.
About the matrix infos I think the one above on post 45 could be correct due to the fact it was purchased at the day it came out.

Thank you. Yes I did go and read your original post, in fact that helped me to track down the copy I ended up buying on Ebay. Everything checks out from your list and my copy matches it all. I hope it sounds as good as people claim.
