Hey, how many eye rolls will I get if I state I'm listening to a tasty "I Know You Rider", Dead & Co., 6/26/16? And would those eyes be rolling at my use of "tasty" or that it's Bobbymayercoverdead or both? After that "Working And Writing" from The Clash's Vanilla Tapes (an early work up of "Clampdown"). Zevon's "Mohammed's Radio" and then early live Police "Hole In My Life."
For any Phish fans on here, how many hours of Little Feat did Trey listen to before he wrote "Alaska'? I'm listening to the 9/2/16 rendition.
This looks really interesting. Needs Stevie Wonder's version of We Can Work It Out though. SO GOOD. I'm currently in the middle of Rory Gallagher's Beat Club Sessions
Listened to some Allan Holdsworth on youtube, which led me to this video of Holdsworth playing "Treacherous Cretins" with Zappa Plays Zappa. The commenters are convinced that Holdsworth was drunk or having instrument issues or both. I'm not so sure. His expressions while playing make think there's something going on, but if I ignore the video and just listen, it sounds like the sort of Weirdness Frank would approve of. That then led to this video of Frank playing "Treacherous Cretins" in France in 1979, which is stellar. It's stuff like this that makes me wish Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar was a 20-CD box set. The band stuff is hit or miss for me, but I never get tired of his playing.
Assif Tsahar, Mark Dresser & Gerry Hemingway Code Read incredible tenor sax/bass/drums improvisations Recorded live 5/11/2011 A joy to hear the great Dresser/Hemingway team playing with such fire 30-35 years into their partnership. Perpetually modern and kicking butt and taking names. Untouchable. For those who might not know, they anchored the seminal Anthony Braxton Quartet for about a decade from the mid-80's to mid 90's. Also great to hear a current tenor man ripping it. Plus the couple of tracks with Asiff on bass clarinet are a great contrast.
I'm listening to flute in a rock setting--Tull, "Nothing Is Easy" from Live at the Isle of Wight 1970. Best version of this tune I've ever heard. As a kid I had a catalog for MFSL vinyl and that's how it described a Tull album, "flute in a rock setting."
This thing again, I was singing the title track to myself half the day, so finally had to put it on: 'All Along the Watchtower' right now. For me, the definitive version.
That Dylan put me in the mood for this, contains a masterful reading of "Frankie Lee and Judas Priest.":
I recently listened to this record for the first time in 15 years. I feel like it doesn't have as high a place in his catalogue as it ought to: 'Dirge' and 'Going going gone' are two of his best songs ever, and a lot of people like 'Forever Young' thats like 2/3 of the album.
"Dirge" is one Bob's perfect songs. I can hardly blame you. That album is addictive (particularly the mono version).
Big fan of this album. Highlights for me are Tough Mama and the funky version of Forever Young. I much prefer that to the slow, dirge version.
