Playing the epic prog masterpiece of 2017. No, it's not by Stephen Wilson... King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland
I spent the night before yesterday getting drunk as a skunk and ended up returning 3,5 bottles of red wine into a bucket. How was your Holidays? LOL. I must have had myself a merry little Xmas because I found piles of hair metal and poodle rock records all over the place the day after. Van Hagar, Tesla, Ratt, Stage Dolls... So the last couple of days I've been laying low. The only album I've heard today was one I don't even really like but it was too much of an effort to actually change it.
I bought this when it came out with high expectations. I tried, I tried--expectations not met. I gave this band so many chances. (No, this is not a swipe at @Erik B. or @budwhite or any Crowes fan. I gave up on these guys long before I inter-met you guys.) I actually like CRB a lot more which I guess says a lot about me--head baked in the CA sun and all. Edit: I like Greatest Hits 1990-1999 though, but it's weird how they loaded three songs on it from the album @JNTEX posted above. I also have Warpaint, Before The Frost and Southern Harmony. I find the first two entirely inoffensive. "Sting Me" or a similar song on Southern Harmony gets sort of grating for me.
"You'll get nothing and like it!" The way I unknowingly scored this fine, fine attire is my brother texted me a Christmas list, and I responded with this:
By far my favorite Crows record but the show (to support it) my now wife and I saw in S.F was weak except for a pretty decent cover of 'Oh Well'. I dig them in Glamish mode but the show was limp. It was my third time seeing them and none of the shows did much for me and this was my last try. Still enjoy the record...
I don't think it is fair to compare the two. CRB is a southern version of the JGB and the Crowes are like the Faces meets the Stones southern rock style. I love them both but tend to listen to the CRB more these days because they are a touring entity rather than an extinct dinosaur. That being said . . . I go back and forth between Amorica and Southern Harmony as my fave Crowes record.
Btw, starting with By Your Side is a little like starting with In the Dark and then coming to the conclusion that you are not into the dead. There are many depths to be discovered under that surface. IMHO (added for neutrality)
Amorica has been a favorite since I bought that CD on the stand new...still have it. The crowes kinda fell off the map for me after that....so just picking up with what I missed.
Three Snakes and One Charm is their last classic, IMHO. I do like By Your Side even though it is clearly poppy. I'm not a huge fan of the Lions. Nor the comeback records although they have their moments.
