Speaking of the Stones, spent last night watching Crossfire Hurricane on Netflix. An interesting overview with lots of great archival footage.

I know, right? There have been a few records over my lifetime that I knew
to get and be blown away by, but for some reason never acquired it. The
first three I got, really liked Amorica, and from what I'd read and heard
live, felt Charms would be as good or better. So better late than never.
It sure did not disappoint as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Listening to some English jazz right now on mvyradio, sounds great, only
problem being they are not playlisting the Sunday Morning All That Jazz
program. Oh, latin jazz now-here is one El Matador-Tribu... nice vibraphone
chops, another John Coltranes's Giant Steps just before.

Nice going! I got this as a birthday gift a couple of years ago which was really cool.

There’s some good quotes about it’s influence on Jerry in Grateful Dead Guide: Garcia's Record Collection

Harry Smith’s Anthology of Folk Music, from 1952, was one of the most important and influential Folkways releases in unveiling an earlier world of American music. It was certainly a revelation for Garcia. Robert Hunter remembered, “Back in 1961 there was only one copy around our scene, belonging to Grace Marie Haddie. The six-disc boxed collection was too expensive for guitar-playing hobos like me and Garcia, even if we had a record player, or a place to keep a record player. Grace Marie had a job and an apartment and a record player. We would visit her apartment constantly with hungry ears. When she was at work, we’d jimmy the lock to her apartment or crawl through the window if the latch was open. Had to hear those records.”

Garcia had never heard these old-time 78s from the ‘20s and ‘30s before discovering the Folkways records, but soon found that there was a collectors’ network that had much more. “Once I found out there was such a world, I met guys who were into 78s and collected them. So then I had access to them and I could mine that resource. But I had no consciousness of it before the Folkways stuff came out. For me it was the Harry Smith anthology that showed me that there was this vital, rich, primitive form with these guys sawing away on their fiddles and banjos and singing in these creaky old voices. That was very exciting for me. I knew the blues version of it to an extent, because by then I’d heard Blind Lemon Jefferson and some of those other early guys, but before Folkways I didn’t know there was this other white music in America.”

Instrumental album by Phil from 1982. It gets more and more interesting with each listen.

Just received my Wings Over America deluxe box in the mail.

I'm not one to go ga-ga over stuff (yea right... :p ) but HOLY CRAP this box set!!!

Aside from the glaring omission of the Rockshow film (yea it got it's own release but c'mon, why not chuck it in too?), I can't think of anything they could've done to make this any better.

For a start, it's friggin' gorgeous.

The AMOUNT of content also blew me away - I'm gonna be pouring over the books for the next few days.

    This is a stunning work.

Can anyone tell me if the other archive sets live up to this standard? Cuz this was the best $106 I've ever spent I think.

Hell, if I pain $200 and got this I'd still maybe call it a bargain!!!

I was able to request a copy from intralibrary loan. It's cool, but I don't feel like it's something I'd listen to very often.

Do you have or have you heard Levon's American Son album? I love that one all the way through.

9.5/10 Audience recording. Just phenomenal quality.

Love this tour and this band. I think Robbie McIntosh is probably the best lead guitarist Paul has ever had. He's just fantastic - plus his slide work is KILLER.

I bought my vinyl edition in the late 60s & bought the CD when 1st released...

Everything about it hearkens back to a lost time in America...

I listen to it to be transported back to that lost time...

I am totally captivated by the music & the historical facts within the music & the flow is remarkable...

Although I don't return to the gospel stuff very often but I still play something from it about once a month...

It ranks with Lomax Library of Congress Recordings of numerous great American artists as far as being essential documents of American music...

Great to see someone else is interested in it as well..

    A beautiful artifact...indeed

For Erik's sake, I'm gonna tack this sloop back to familiar waters.

Nothing sacrificed: sneering sax, brash horns, screaming lead guitar, colon bouncing bass, funky e-keys. Talk about the whole 'book by its cover' axiom. And I swear that safari-jacketed thug with his polyester posse were pushing the volume to dangerous decibels by sheer force of musical will. Or it could have been me in the dizzied throes of a plaid, striped, and velour fugue.

Hard-to-find-physical media though, which has a become a common problem lately; but I've tagged a reputable Euro seller with the CD on discogs for about $20. hmmmmm. e.g.:

EDIT: Including The Dan "Do It Again" instrumental cover you didn't know you were waiting to hear! (Kind of like Bale as the Batman you couldn't image waiting to see, or Craig as a relevant resurrection of the obsolete womanizing suave-spy archetype.)

That sounds like the Preservation Hall Jazz Band colliding with Parliament/Funkadelic. But in a good way.

At least @Erik B. is happy. :agree:

It's been a long time since I've listened to this lot. The bonus material in the retrospective box set includes some serious 12" mixes. Apparently there are two versions of the band now. I'm sure there were lawyers involved...:disgust:
