Yes, definitely an alternate shot. The cover shot is probably not that much cropped either, just photographer much closer. Look how Lennon's face is in focus, while his guitar is already out of focus. That only happens if you are very close with your camera and would not have been possible on the second shot, unless you would have use a large-format camera with very shallow depth of field etc.
I can see why they would have cropped that Elvis album cover. His pants are filthy. Which is cool. Rock n Roll should be dirty
Is there any place to get a high-quality print of this Elvis picture? Someone earlier mentioned it may have been in Mojo... .
Here is another one, actually a slight alternate shot, but it's revealing where the original photo was actually taken:

This I've never seen, and as a huge fan of that albums it's very, very cool! Love a good quality print of that!

That is WAY COOL, my favorite Kate album! I had an EMI promo poster of that tinted black and white poster in the bedroom for many years! Are we all aware of the Houdini "key passed through a kiss" reference of this photo?
Here is another interesting one... the cover of "Kveikur" by Sigur Rós, and the original uncropped photo by Lygia Clark:
