Masterpiece: Clapton goes far above and beyond with the guitar work on this one.

Zappa ~ RDNZL (Studio Tan), The Torture Never Stops (live)
Pat Flynn (New Grass Revival) ~ Metric Lips, Can't Stop Now
David Gilmour ~ Biding My Time, The Nile Song, Obscured By Clouds, Sheep
Syd Barrett ~ Gigolo Aunt (that tone!)
Pete Townshend ~ Run Run Run, Our Love Was, Sparks (live Woodstock/Kids Are Alright soundtrack)
Richard Thompson (Fairport) ~ Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman, Dirty Linen (dueling with Dave Swarbrick's fiddle)
Richard Thompson (solo) ~ Mother Knows Best, Hard On Me (live), Dad's Gonna Kill Me
Justin Hayward ~ Eternity Road (beautiful little solo)
Jerry Garcia ~ Help On the Way/Slipknot! (if we include vault releases, we'd need another thread)
    Robbie Robertson ~ Unfaithful Servant
Jerry Donahue (Fotheringay) ~ Banks of the Nile, Too Much of Nothing
Alex Lifeson ~ Anthem, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, La Villa Strangiato (entire trio rawks)
Robert Fripp ~ Red (seconding this one), Fallen Angel (same album)
Steve Howe ~ Awaken (main riffs as much as the solo)

not obscure songs (it's The Beatles), but I'm calling out these solos from George:

Nowhere Man, Hey Bulldog, You Never Give Me Your Money, Come Together

I'm going to go with "I Put a Spell on You" by CCR. John Fogerty's guitar solo in that song is amazing and doesn't get enough attention.

Sonic Youth is generally underrated as they had a reputation for "noise". But if you check out the Ranaldo/Moore intricate double guitar working in tracks like "Stones" and "Rain on Tin" there is really, really good stuff

The Hollies' version of The Air That I Breathe is not my usual cup of tea, more the kind of song up my wife's alley, but I do like it. Given all the controversy about its chord progression, and the obvious focus on the lead and harmony vocals, I always hear that very tasteful guitar to open it, and although brief the perfect solo in the middle, by Tony Hicks.

Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this released Nils' solo is his original studio solo edited to play backwards.

  19. I’ll mention a few albums that aren’t necessarily regarded as guitar albums but I think should be...

    Wilco “A Ghost is Born”
    Superchunk “Come Pick me Up”
    All “Breaking Things” or “Pummel”
Ty Segall “Manipulator”, “S/T”, or “Freedom’s Goblin”

Just the first that popped into my head!

I'm a big fan of the band Guster.. There's a solo on the song Ruby Falls (on their album Ganging Up On The Sun) that just gets in the feels.. It's like they dipped into my brain and managed to similate the sound in my head in times of extreme turmoil and put it on a record.. Every frustration, ever bad day.. all in a solo.. If you haven't listened to Guster.. give it a try.

  24. John Martyn's guitar solos- particularly those on his album One World, his "official bootleg" Live at Leeds, and "Glistening Glyndebourne", from Bless the Weather. It's a pity the upload of "Glyndebourne" to Youtube is so flawed by wow&flutter that it's borderline unlistenable.

Fortunately, the 12" extended version of "Big Muff" from One World (co-written and co-produced by Martyn's pal, Lee Perry) is up on teh Ytubes in good condition. Uploaded only slightly hot, & with several side orders of mind alteration, courtesy of Perry's signature touch on the controls

The incredible guitar interplay on Honky Tonk Woman, especially during the solo - masterful.
