So, what would you consider to be an underrated soundtrack?

I would nominate Jackie Brown. Bill Withers, Johnny Cash, The Delfonics...c'mon, don't get much better.

The Chocolate War (1988). Never commercially released, but it’s a stunner. Kate Bush, Yaz/Yazoo, Peter Gabriel, Joan Armatrading, and Windham Hill pianist Scott Cossu are all featured

1.) Pretty in Pink - “Pretty in Pink” (Psychedelic Furs); “Send in the Dancing Horses” (Echo & the Bunnymen); “If You Leave” (OMD); “Left of Center” (Suzzane Vega)

2.) That Thing You Do! - they may be fake 60s pop tunes, but they are great fake 60s pop tunes. I have several songs on my Spotify playlist - “That Thing You Do,” “Dance With Me Tonight;” “She Knows It; ”Hold My Hand, Hold My Heart.” I love the fake liner notes which provides additional details to the movie subplots (ex. Why Jimmy did record with Playtone Records again after he quit?”)

The Velvet Goldmine offers an underrated soundtrack for an overlooked film. There's a fun mix of classic 70s music (Eno, Roxy Music, T. Rex), covers (including Sonic Youth and Thom Yorke doing his best Bryan Ferry) and newer tracks done in the style of 70s glam.

One of my favorites, from a movie I've never seen......That Summer. Picked this up in the bargain bin in 1980 or so. Great soundtrack.

The soundtrack to the defunct television show, CROSSING JORDAN, has some cool cover treats from the big names in the adult alternative field: Richard Thompson, Sam Phillips, Lucinda Williams, etc.

I think this one is more obscure than underrated.

Soundtrack of Sweden: Heaven and Hell a sort of soft-core porn documentary featuring the original Mah Na Mah Na more widely, though incorrectly, known as a Muppet's tune.

I bought the soundtrack and out of curiosity rented the film. That movie is shockingly good. My expectations were well exceeded. Claude Akins is cast against type and steals the show.

My understanding is that Larry McMurtry wrote the script (based on Mellencamp's notes) because Mellencamp had produced his son's record and got him on to a major label. Or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway, the sublimely clever conceit is that Mellencamp plays a successful music star who doesn't know to act normal around his old friends and family. So whether Mellencamp is actually acting well or not becomes immaterial, because the character's hopelessly conflicted. Now that's making lemonade out of a lemon.
