Comparing chart performances of different eras stinks.
    They are completely different animals.

I'm thinking tournament format. Put 25 of them in a group, and the top 10 in each of the four groups advance. Do it again for the top 40, and the top 4 in each group moves on to a head-to-head battle.

Seems like there would be some interest, but unless the players were committed to hearing those they don't know (and I'd be one of the ones that had to do some YouTube listening), it would boil down to the familiar tracks from the 60-80's.

I found a couple more (17 total). I don't think it is too modern of a list for the forum. It isn't in the forum wheelhouse, but it's close enough.

Sorry, but I think thats a pretty cool list. A few I love, a few I loathe, and a bunch that cover the spread.

Do it! This is the ultimate eclectic list if ever there was one.

I plan to; I may run it on two different boards at the same time, just to see how/if the results vary.

I don't think it's because of lack of competition. There seems to be plenty of that on today's chart. It's just that the changes Billboard made allow for longer stays at the top. People seem to love repetition, and the charts since the Soundscan era began seem to reflect that. I have to wonder what the list of #1 songs would have looked like had Soundscan been around back then. Most likely a lot less #1's, I would guess. The fact that no year since Soundscan began in 1992 has managed 20 #1 songs would seem to offer more proof of that.

    On U.S. 45 rpm singles, I have 1-4, 7-10, 13, 15-17, 19-24, 27, 29, 31, 33-41, 43-46, 49, 51, 52, 54-57, 59, 63, 64, 66-68, 70, 73-75, 77, 78, 81-93, 95-98
    On U.K. 45 rpm singles, I have 62, 71, 99 (no U.S. 45s exist for these 1990s hits)
    If I counted correctly, I have 73 of the 100 on 45s.

In theory (I haven't done a full inventory), I have a stock CD single of 18 and promo CD singles of 60 and 94.
    I have 42 on the U.S. CD Now That's What I Call Music! 10.
    I have 50 on the U.S. CD Now That's What I Call Music! 27.

    I may have these but can't confirm it: 11, 14, 25, 28, 61, 80

    I don't have 5, 6, 12, 26, 30, 32, 47, 48, 53, 58, 65, 69, 72, 76, 79, 100

Yeah, I agree. But part of the reason for doing it would be to HOPEFULLY get some folks talking about some of the newer material--other than "all the new stuff stinks."

Unless, of course, that is their opinion after actually hearing it.

I've started putting it together, and found that if I used every fourth song, one group wound up with three McCartney entries ("Ebony And Ivory," "Say Say Say" and "Silly Love Songs.") I'm going to finish it up, and then scatter some songs if I see more things like that, or one group heavily weighted toward the first 25 years of the chart.

And speaking of Rod I didn't know Tonight's The Night was THAT huge, to place THAT high on the list.

I'd keep them the Macca's in the same group. There would be nothing more tedious than seeing an all Macca or Beatles final 4.

We had to leave the house and physically buy singles. Now most do it from home with a download. Don't get me wrong I download some stuff but the other day in the news they said Justin Bieber passed the Beatles in some sales category. In the 60's and early 70's no digital downloads. A giant asterisk on the Biebs! At least half his fans didn't leave home to make a purchase. That makes it outrageous to think how many people went out and bought Hey Jude. I was in record retail management when You Light Up My Life came out. We couldn't keep it in stock.
