As a fan of 'The Fifth Element' this looks pretty interesting to me. Not sure about the music though.

    Looks interesting.

I don't care if the plot is stupid, I'll easily get $8 worth of eye candy.

Well, whomever has remixed/mashed The Beatles for this trailer has officially brought them to the 21st Century and offered them to a new generation. I actually think it's brilliantly done without losing its mind. It's edgy enough and it fits the trailer really well.

    Purists be warned!

I used to read the graphic novels as a kid and it'll be a thrill to see this on the big screen.

Well, I thought Lucy was a really stupid film, and the Valerian trailer looks like Besson's recycling a lot of The Fifth Element, but I'll go and watch it all the same...

I'll admit I know nothing of the original comic book, but there's a somewhat informative breakdown of the trailer:

Luc Besson's "Transporter "had the oomph factor.
    And let's not forget Leon.

Looks like fun, but it also looks like its meant to be funny which Bresson does NOT do well .

I agree, Robert Bresson's films are not very funny. ;)

Even Bresson's films are funnier than Besson's.

Whatever it takes to help cover that $180-$200 million cost of production, I can't blame them.

New trailer. If you love sci-fi, it's pure eye candy.

If you love scifi, you're more into ideas, concepts and story than eye-candy.

As I was telling my friend, the YouTube content producer, I think this might suffer from what I dubbed 'The John Carter effect'; a work gets negatively compared to the media it inspired (for Valerian's case, Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, even and especially The Fifth Element)

Incidentally, if you want to want to read the stories before this comes out, Cinebooks are publishing English translations of the original albums; they're currently up to Circles of Power and Hostages of Ultralum and Orphan of the Stars will be out before the movie.

You want to read them in the original French? Amazon France has you covered (so does Amazon Canada) with the Integrale volumes.

I remember the comic albums (Dargaud published them) and they were really good new wave sf.

Of course not, but it shouldn't be the raison d'etre for a science fiction film/show, but merely the icing. This movie seems to lean very heavily towards the former (like say Jupiter Ascending, Lucy, Trek Beyond, etc).

At any rate, it doesn't look like a scifi film but a fantasy film in space, like say Star Wars.

The comic albums had ideas, it was obvious the creators had been reading a lot of New Worlds writers and late '60s-'70s 'soft' sf, and 2001, Phil Dick, but there is an aspect of adventure/Barbarella too. They were some of the best sf comics, certainly ahead of a lot of what U.S. comic books offered at the time.

I'm thinking the actor in the title role looks a lot younger than the comic character, dare I say too young?

He kind of does look right except for that. She doesn't seem to have the orangey-red hair of Laureline either though.

Looks like a visually scintillating film. On another note Plan9, I just rewatched through Avatar: The Last Airbender. Still an engaging series! Also watched a video on YouTube by a dude named Nostalgia Critic who ripped into the movie. Seeing him lose it over the Earth Benders left me howling. LMAO
