This probably won't generate much of a thread, but I've gotta post this.

I just watched a program called Sult: Spirit of the Music (w/ Donal Lunny). The guest list was pretty impressive: Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Mark Knopfler, Sinead, and others.

The performance that blew me away: Van singing "Saint Dominic's Preview." It's a song I've always loved, but this performance made me love it even more. When Van is feeling it, there's no singer like him. And he's DEFINITELY feeling it in this performance.

Honorable mention: Elvis singing "Little Palaces"--an incredibly dark song that is also incredibly pretty.

Apparently, there was a soundtrack CD released.

So has anyone ever seen (or heard) this show?

Never heard of the show, but would have enjoyed seeing Van's performance.

I think a Gort gave this a more descriptive title--Thanks!

    Glad you enjoyed this, too.

Previously, I only knew of Lunny from his session work with Elvis C.

But every single performance on this special was strong.

Didn't EC help out Donal a few years ago with Emmylou Harris? I remember him doing U2's Please acoustic and then he and Emmylou did (The then unreleased) Heart Shaped Bruise as a heartbreaking duet.

    If there's a soundtrack I want it!

EDIT: found the track list, EC must've withheld permission :(

  7. Dónal Lunny along with others such as Christy Moore are living legends, Dónal and his younger brother Manus are both amazing musicians and have played a very large part in Irish music both traditional and beyond.

Through Planxty, The Bothy Band and then Moving Hearts where Dónal teamed up with Davy Spillane creating an amazing melting pot of celtic folk, jazz, rock and free flow jams.

Thanks for the reminder to get on over soon to the celtic music thread that was started the other day ... :righton:

Sult is an Irish word meaning variously "pleasure", "enjoy" etc.

This show was broadcast on TG4, the channel that I also present for.

Apart from Dónal, I can also see in the background the superb Nodlaig Ní Chathasaigh on fiddle, the amazing Stephen Cooney on gut-string guitar and the so-so Mary Black.

Incidentally, just two weeks ago Sinéad Ó Connor sang "Nothing Compares 2 U" on the Graham Norton Show on BBC2 backed solely by Steve Cooney. Probably on youtube by now

Certainly looks like it and directed by Bob Corkey with whom I've worked numerous times.

Only thing is it certainly was not presented in English and "Galician" as described.

    Dónal presented it in Irish.

Ahhh, thanks for the link. It seems I HAVE seen that performance before, and yes, it is sublime. :righton:
