Just to play along, I'll go with St Dominic's Preview.
It's not too long, it's not too moody, but it has a great chorus and majesty to it.
A nice compromise between Mystic Van and R&B Van.
And the lyrics are somewhat scathing while being warm and insightful.
I'll knock my hanging chad off that one.

It's not easy to pick one, but I'll nominate "You Don't Pull No Punches But You Don't Push The River" from Veedon Fleece as his greatest song. Taken together, the final three songs from his Into The Music album might be his greatest musical statement, but that's 3 songs so that doesn't qualify here.

There's lots of "right answers" when pondering Van's greatest song :)

    Too hard.

    I’ll go with “Cypress Avenue.”

I love so many of his songs but I chose Madame George because it's the one song that really gets me every time. Really really gets me. No matter how many times I hear it, as soon as he sings the first line I take a deep breath, exhale and I'm in another place for nine minutes. Every time.

Van Morrison, when you are in the mood, is one of the few artists that can do this--really take you to a whole other level.

I've got around fifteen of his albums. Too many great songs to pick my favorite, however "Gloria" was the most influential rock song for all the garage bands which followed.

Is there a song written that is more profound? What greater song about transcendence, even of death (if you choose to interpret it that way)? The music itself is so beautiful that it can be a transcendent experience even without considering the lyrics.

  18. Great taste. I absolutely love Van's performance from The Last Waltz. It helps push Caravan over the top for me as his greatest song.

The Last Waltz is funny with all that legendary music talent assembled in one spot, I think Van and Neil Diamond stole the show.
