Very impressive display. I did not know there were so many variations.

Could you take a few moments to list what you have? Like - what's the difference between the two Vertigos for the self-titled album? And the two targets for the self-titled - is the one on the right the Japanese target.

Same title: Blue swirl Blue text (very first European pressing), Blue swirl Black text (early European pressing), WG target, Japan target

Communiquè: same as ST (Blue Swirl Blue text is that one coming)

MM: same, but no targets (they don't exist)

LOG: same (targets are swapped: Jap - WG)

Alchemy: Blue Swirl Black text, WG target (I'm not aware of Blue text and Jap target for this title)

For each Blue Swirl Black text I have 2 variations (not shown in the pic): "Made in WG" and "Made in WG by Polygram" (MM without "by Polygram" is coming)

Sorry to hijack, but can someone please tell me what the difference is between the blue vertigo and the orange vertigo swirls? I have orange swirls of the first 4 albums.

I'm not the person to answer but I think they have the same masterings. For me it is just a collection of aesthetic- historic meaning (I have also all the red swirls)

Yes. I have yet to encounter an orange swirl that has a different mastering that its blue swirl counterpart.

The orange swirls came later. They are cool-looking and maybe slightly collectible (obviously they still have the first masterings), but not nearly as much as either of the two blue swirl styles.

Actually, I think the orange swirl labels were, in some cases, in print for quite a while. The early PolyGram pressings are the ones to get, I think.

  25. The blue swirl and orange swirl/fan Vertigo CD's all feature the same mastering for each album. That mastering can also be found on the WG Target pressings (Polygram).

The Japanese Target pressings have the Warner Bros. mastering and are identical with the early US releases.

Just in case anybody was wondering.

For Making Movies, the Vertigo (Polygram) and Warner Bros. mastering is almost identical. I once did some comparison, and they were the same up to around 20 kHz. Beyond 20 kHz, one of the masterings appeared to have a drastic cut-off compared to the other one. Don't remember for sure which version was the one which was cut off beyond approx. 20 kHz.

For the self-titled album, the Warner Bros. mastering has the full versions of the songs (no early fades like on some tracks of the Vertigo's). Sonically, I think the Vertigo mastering is slightly superior for this album. But there were times when I thought the Warner Brox. was slightly better.

For "Communique", I don't remember exactly, but I think the last time I compared I had a slight preference for the Warner Bros. mastering, but don't quote me on that. I suppose I should compare them again.

For "Love Over Gold", I have a slight preference for the Vertigo mastering, but it wasn't a huge difference.

I have never heard the Warner Bros. version of "Alchemy" so I don't know if it has a different mastering than the Vertigo.
