Hi Guys and Gals! I've just obtained a very early example of the Marantz 7 in the 10200 serial number range, making it among the first ever produced. The chassis color is green instead of the usual brownish color. I am in the process of setting up a full tubed Marantz system in which this preamp will be centerpiece. In the meantime, I couldn't resist to try it out by connecting it to my Schiitt Asgard/Bifrost combo. The signal goes from the BIfrost DAC into the Marantz. The power amp outputs then feed the Schiiit Asgard. Headphones are Sennheiser HD600's Using a Squeezebox Touch and FLAC high resolution source files the thing sounds amazing! Yes, it has tube "bloom" in spades and like our host likes to say "breath of life". But it also very transparent at the same time. It ads virtually nothing to the signal in terms of noise or hum. Very impressive for a preamp that was built 53 years ago! Today I added an original cabinet and it looks gorgeous!
