An old guy who is a friend gave me his Jazz Records. Seems to be mainly 60s upbeat Jazz. he was a Horn player, so there is a lot of that sort of stuff.

Lot of stuff I have never heard of. There is a bit of old Blue Note reissues.

Its good to listen to something different.

Congrats! Invite your friend over, pour a couple cold ones and have him tell you about his favorites. Happy listening!

That's very cool. I like the suggestion above to help you learn about what you have and also to extend appreciation to the friend.

  7. That's a nice gesture...but did your friend wake up one day and realize he didn't like jazz?

BTW any Blue Note records you find with an indented circle in the label area and squiggles in the dead wax are bad pressings that will sound awful, I'd be happy to dispose of them for you....:agree:

Seriously though, enjoy your new acquisitions.

No, he's just old, and needed to downsize. Also hes not very well, I have a horrible feeling hes getting towards the end. He is in his early 80s with crook lungs.

I listened to some Hank Crawford, Elvin Jones and Stanley Turpentine last night. I really liked it. Good to get away from Rock, Metal and Blues

  9. My biggest regret (maybe in life, but definitely in record collecting) is not driving over immediately when a guy listed 1,500 jazz lp's for sale for "a few hundred dollars".

I had some workers at my house when the guy got back to me. Told him I'd drive over in a few hours, but asked if he could take some pics and text them to me first. He stopped responding. I'm guessing he found a buyer who came over immediately and didn't ask for any pics.

In my imagination, this collection was all mint OP Blue Note masterpieces and I blew it. :)

  10. Sorry to hear your friend isn't so well. Those are some fine musicians, Turpentine was a fine player, as good as his similarly named contemporary Stanley Turrentine. ;)

And Stanley's brother, Tommy, plays some fine jazz trumpet, too!

That's great. A friend of mine sent me a box of records not too long ago. Some good stuff like Teddy Wilson. Other names that I had never heard of like Joe Bushkin and Al Caiola.
    Enjoy!

he means that on your profile, under "musical preferences", you say "some jazz", and was asking if you were new to the genre.

Oh ok gotya.... That might have been a bit optimistic by me. I always liked Django, Joe Pass, Les PaUL George Benson, Barney Kessel, Larry Carlton Miles Davis but never really properly delved properly into Jazz.

I am mainly aware of the guitarists as I was a professional guitarist for years. But to be honest it was only because they were name checked in guitar magazines. My father was a rock pianist, so I never really got exposed to it.
