Also pretty cool (and maybe a little mean) to pull a joke on his backup singing bass player like that on televison. I mentioned Waylon over in the "Musicians who are better lead guitarists than most people realize"-thread. I should have posted that clip instead, but I posted this as illustration:
Yep, as mentioned is Waylon's autobiography with Lenny Kaye. Available as a hard copy OR, you can listen to Waylon tell it himself: https://www.audible.com.au/pd/Biogr...Vj6mWCh0iygjZEAQYASABEgJkrfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Top stuff. That Analogue Pearls SACD has absolutely incredible sound quality. It's one of my favorite SACDs. It has as good as sound as Steve's Nat King Cole SACDs for AP. There is some interesting stuff about Waylon in Jessi Colter's autobiography.
Waylon wrote a pretty good autobiography. Funniest story in it ... Billie Jean Jones Eshliman Williams Horton Berlin, widow of Hank Williams and Johnny Horton (among others), former girlfriend of Faron Young ... her face and figure would stop a clock cold, may have been the best looking female ever even remotely associated with country music ... hit on Waylon really HARD one night, can't recall if it was at a bar or a party. Waylon didn't want any of that. He told her, "Lady you killed Hank Williams and Johnny Horton and you stunted Faron Young's growth, I ain't interested."
Man, I am not familiar with this album and done before his RCA period, if I am correct. I will have to check this out. Was this material included on one of the Bear Family box sets?
Thanks, Rick, I thought so and I do have both the Bear Family box sets, but I usually play the Six Strings Away one more often. I thought I remembered hearing his version of Unchained Melody before and I guess it was indeed on the Destiny's Child box set.
I don't have that SACD disc, but we know how great sounding the Bear Family sound is, but this release for those tracks is a sonic upgrade again! Everybody raves about how great it is.
It's worth getting, I put a saved search on the 'bay, a good copy came up after a few months and I picked it up for less than a tenner.
That is exactly what I was thinking and based on PhantomStranger's recommendation and the fact that he compared it to those fantastic SACD's on Nat King Cole that Steve and Kevin did for AP, I think I have to try to pick up a copy of that SACD on Waylon. And again, I do agree with you that the Bear Family box sets' have fantastic remastering as well, but it will be fun to get the SACD and compare and contrast a little bit.
The bass player on these early sessions was a guy named Paul Foster. He can be seen in many of Waylon's early gigs. Here he is in later years talking about them ol' days: If you have the Bear Family CD 'Live at JD's', the material came from Paul's collection.
Is there a way for me to watch this Waylon video on the Country Music Hall of Fame digital archive? Link: TV Pilot for Cowboy Jack Clement Show, w/ Performances from Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter [video recording] :: Moving Images Cheers.
It would be great to see! Some of the segments have surfaced here and there, some great ones in the brilliant and fantastic Jack Clement DVD: 'Shakespeare was a huge George Jones fan' from 2005.
He had something like 4 or 5 telecasters that he used often over his career. The info is a little 'shady' however regarding his trademark guitars.
I recently read his Son's book as well as Jessi's book on Waylon. They both complement his autobiography very nicely. Both were worthwhile reads.
For those who might not be familiar with his "later" stuff. This is a must have from 1990. Also, this is a must have............
