He did appear on Letterman in 1982 or 83.

He wasn't really that incoherent...if you're familiar with the way he talks and communicates.

Letterman asked him what he was currently up to and he said that he was going to "hide in the desert in a trailer and paint" and everybody was like "okay - what is this guy talking about?"

Sure enough....that is exactly what he did....so it wasn't such a strange comment after all.

He also talked about his interests in animal rights, but he kind of went off on a tangent and Dave/the audience didn't know what he was talking about. Something like "There are people cutting the peaks off pelicans. They deserve a big spanking." Eveyone was like "okaaaay", but I understood him just fine.

He was holding a bottle in a paper bag the whole time - which probably made people suspicious.

The 1980 appearance on SNL was pretty shaky. It was that Magic Band's first appearance in public and they were a little rusty. Beefheart was reportedly "very frightened and coked up".

Beefheart didn't say "****" at the end...it was reportedly someone in the audience who didn't like the music.
