I hate to say it, but the one summer I was depressed, the despair overpowered any music I played to counteract it. There are a couple Beatles songs I can't listen to without my stomach churning because they bring me back to that period.

Mainly "Come Together" and "Something", fortunately neither of which were among my favourites prior.

Has to be Elton John's - Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy. There's salvation within those grooves!

There are albums for wallowing in depression and albums for trying to break out of it. I would choose the latter.

At the moment, I would play Old 97's raucous, feel-good Most Messed Up, whose 12 songs are all about getting drunk and laid.

Unlike most people, I actually don't listen to much (if any) music if I'm depressed or in a negative mood. But these 2 albums are the exceptions: [IMG] [IMG]

There's actually a song on Duke that brings me back to a very unhappy point in my life. (Alone Tonight)

  16. Don't think you read the thread title correctly. It said "helped you through depression", not "which album(s) depressed the hell out of you!"

This album helped me get through my first big breakup back in 1990, when I was figuratively knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly in the gut by an ex GF's actions:

I have suffered from depression on several occasions: the music that helped me through is as follows:

    1. Jerry Lee Lewis: Southern Roots
    2. Sam Cooke: Portrait of A Legend
    3. Wilson Pickett: A Man & A Half
    4. Ray Charles: Genius + Soul = Jazz
    5. Mark Ronson: Version
    6. Bob Dylan: New Morning
    7. Morris On: Ashley Hutchings / Richard Thompson
    8. John Martyn: Solid Air
    9. Renee Fleming: Sacred Songs
    10. Dr John: Anutha Zone
