According to Wikipedia, "a signature song is the one song (or, in some cases, one of a few songs) that a popular and well-established recording artist or band is most closely identified with or best known for, even if they have had success with a variety of other songs."

If you had to narrow down Elton John's signature songs to just 3, what do you think they would be?

My parents' generation grew up with and loved Your Song, Candle in the Wind was a popular song in both the 70's, 80's and 90's in various incarnations and Can You Feel the Love Tonight got kids my age and a little bit older - and even younger - hooked on EJ. Tiny Dancer - it's only in recent years - at least over here - that it has garnered any popularity, but at the moment it probably is in the top 3.

I'm a huge EJ fan from way back and I could go on and on. But my 3 choices are from what I experience when I talk to different people about EJ.

Those are the songs I think of when Elton John comes up, anyway.

I went Rocket Man, Yellow Brick Road and Feel the Love. Your Song and Bennie are right there.

Elton himself once said that if there was just one song he thought he'd be remembered by it would be Daniel. Of course he'll be remembered for a hell of a lot more but that one does seem to have become a Classic Pop/Rock standard. I'd also put Candle In The Wind largely for it's Princess Diana connection (even though the lyrics were changed). And then, while not one of my personal ALL TIME favorites, I have to go with Your Song. It was the song that introduced most of America to him and to this day it has to stand as one of the greatest debuts by any artist.

...now personal top three...that's another story.

Not nearly enough choices in this poll for Sir Reg.

However: Your Song, Rocket Man, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me.

    In my opinion...

#1 Your Song (Probably his signature song by a fairly hefty margin, in my experience)
    #2 Rocket Man
    #3 Bennie And The Jets

Now my favorite Elton John song is "Tiny Dancer", but as many mention, that's not the question. :)

Your Song - His first big hit
Candle in the Wind - I'm totally sick of this, but it was strongly associated with him even before it went to mass public appeal when Dianna passed away.
Crocodile Rock - A huge his were I am (possibly due to the Daddy Cool Eagle Rock inspiration), and I will be happy if I don't' hear this lightweight song again.

    Close:
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - most would recognise this because of the big album it came from.
Rocket Man, Daniel - Big hits
Tiny Dancer - became very popular after it's inclusion in the Almost Famous film. Personally it's one of his songs (among many I love) that I can't stand.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, seems like this was playing everywhere in the 70s
Tiny Dancer, I love this song but I think this really became iconic with its inclusion in Almost Famous
Can You Feel The Love Tonight, iconic for a generation of kids that grew up with The Lion King

Elton means so many different things to people ... you could create another list of "signature songs" that would be as valid as many chosen for this list, it wouldn't necessarily duplicate a single one of these.
But this is a superb distillation of the best of his signature songs.
Levon, Candle In The Wind, Rocket Man right now for me, but three others tomorrow ...

"Your Song" is almost certainly his signature song, followed by "Candle In The Wind". Next would be either "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" or "Rocket Man" (I voted for the former, but it's a toss-up). And I know for a lot of people The Lion King was a formative movie in their childhood, so it's possible I'm underestimating the appeal of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight".
