What two songs are the band's most distinctive calling cards? I gave you the choices of all their biggest hits i believe. It's a seven day poll.

Tough one. I went with Losing My Religion and Everybody Hurts. The latter just edging out The One I Love.

Picked Radio Free & Losing My Religion. Wish I was into this band when they were touring. Totally missed the boat.

'Don't Go Back To Rockville' (not listed, why?) & 'Radio Free Europe'. I reckon if you where there at the beginning these two songs would mean more.

Yeah, they were a hell of a live band. I saw them 7 times, all the way from a small little theater to an arena. Their two live albums dont compare to how good they actually were live.

Given that I prefer R.E.M.'s early years I voted for "Radio Free Europe" and "So. Central Rain."

I almost listed Rockville but ultimately decided against it.

These two. The early energy and the mature worldliness.

"Fall On Me" for the IRS years and "Losing My Religion" for the WB era. I know Document songs are more well known from the earlier years, but "Fall On Me" really encapsulates what the band was about during it's first main era more than any other song, IMO.

Losing My Religion, definitely. I also went with Man On The Moon, but I think Everybody Hurts also qualifies. (And none of those are even close to being personal favorites, I much prefer the earlier stuff)

Before I even opened the page I thought 'Shiny Happy People' as I recall seeing that a lot on MTV when I worked in a TV shop and when fifty televisions are playing the same thing*, you tend to remember it! It's not listed though...
So I went with 'Man on The Moon' and 'Everybody Hurts'...
*Fifty Sinead O'Connor heads singing 'Nothing Compares 2 U' however is the one that I still have nightmares about!

Though they are nowhere near their best songs.

coming from the late 80s MTV watchers, Stand and Losing my Religion.

Sure Its the End of the World, was a better song than Stand, but that one only got 120 minutes, late night play from what I remember. Also Stand being a perfect formulaic pop song brought in some more mainstream listeners that were then won over

Voted for "Stand" and "End Of The World" because those were the first two that came to mind.

if we're talking the two songs by which the band is defined, it's "Losing My Religion" (uncontested number 1) and a toss-up between ITEOFTWAWKI and "The One I Love."

Rockville is in my top 5 R.E.M. songs but I just listed their hits for the most part. And So. Central Rain which is my second favorite R.E.M. song
