Thanks. I heard that song about 30 years ago but I never knew who did it. Amazon shows it as being available only on MP3.

Another one I like is Loudon Wainwright's "Suddenly it's Christmas."

I thought it was Brooklynese. I wonder if there's any particular reason - some inside joke? - for singing it like that.

I listened to a tape of Los Lobos 'Holiday House Party' broadcast from 1992 on the weekend, and noted Lalo Guerrero w/Los Lobos doing "Mario From The Barrio" & "Pancho Claus"

One of our all time faves is a vinyl only release from the early 80s titled Christmas with the Ghostly Trio. It's jazz played very badly and bizarre enough we still play it every year. Someone has put it on youtube if you wanna get a flavor:

Crocodiles and Dum Dum Girls, "Merry Christmas, Baby (Please Don't Die)". Pretty much exactly what the title says:

Great track. Low are one of the best rock bands active right now, and "Just Like Christmas" was on a Christmas EP (simply entitled "Christmas") released by the band back in 1999. If you want to hear more of Low in general, they have a couple of outstanding free-to-download live EPs that are ideal samplers. You can get "Plays Nice Places", the better of the two, in exchange for an e-mail address here (link to Subpop), and "Live at Eindhoven", which is also great, here (link to Pitchfork).

    "I can't believe
I danced naked with the turkey
    I got stuffing everywhere
I didn't mean to throw up in the children's hair
And I'm sorry I shot your dog
But at the time my mind was in a fog"

It puts a tear in me eye every time.

  18. While I also like the tune, I really don't consider that to be a Christmas song. It's about a guy miserable on Christmas because Dec 25th is the anniversary of the day his girlfriend killed herself.

    Merry Christmas!

    This one:

'Uncle Mistletoe' by Eddy Howard and His Orchestra.

This was a 45 I played to death on my little kid record player in the early 70's, which was handed down to me from my mother(who also played it to death when she was a child).

It takes 23 seconds for the song to start but it's worth it.

"Blue Christmas," By Seymour Swine & The Squealers. It's a cover of Elvis' "Blue Christmas," sung by a guy who does a terrific Porky Pig voice. It has acoustic guitar accompaniment, and I think it was done in the 80s at a North Carlina radio station. Cracks me up every time!

Alas, True Value stopped doing Christmas CDs after Volume 40, which was released in 2005.
