    2. Lawrence of Arabia - Maurice Jarre

IF......The wonderfully anarchic Lyndsey Anderson's masterpiece with music from 'African Sanctus'

WITHNAIL and I ...........'Whiter shade of pale' played by King Curtis, thru Schubert then Jimi Hendrix then Al Bowlly and finishing with George and the Beatles .

THE THIRD MAN............Carol Reed's post war/pre cold war atmospheric film noir , Orson Welles would have stolen the movie but was upstaged by the zither of Anton Karas.

HIGH SOCIETY...............Louis Armstrong and his band , with backup artists Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby!.......'True Love'......'.Did You Evah'......'Who wants to be a millionaire' and
the incredible 'Now you has jazz' with his funkiness Bing Crosby on co vocals with the musician of the century Mr. Louis Armstrong along with Barret Deems on drums!
The goofy Celeste Holm and the astonishingly beautiful Grace Kelly complete a premier cast list for one of the great movies of all time.

JAZZ ON A SUMMERS DAY..............Was there ever a more beautifully photographed documentary , obviously an influence on "Woodstock' .
The music is a fabulous mixture of rock and roll , gospel ,trad jazz and be bop but the real stars are the hipster audience .
As cool as igloos in a desert .............only one artist dares to try and upstage them.......Anita O'Day in her bonnet singing two for tea !

Oh dear, is that five .......got carried away !

Four of my favorite scores (chosen from many favorites), excluding musicals, and excluding soundtracks in the "collection of songs from different artists" sense . . . just listed in alphabetical order:

The Last Temptation of Christ (aka Passion) (1988)
Powaqqatsi (1988) (although if you count that as a musical or a longform "music video," you could substitute Mishima (1985))
    Ravenous (1999)
    The Red Pony (1949)
